Killing Moss on Shingles

Anyone have a good, easy way to kill moss on asphalt shingles? I tried Roundup last summer, but it didn"t seem to do much. Thought I might try bleach next, but figured someone here has to know the answer. Thanks in advance.

Home Depot carries 2 kinds of zinc strips. Except for the packaging and the price, they look identical.

A galvanized ridge cap will do it. Just enough zinc comes off with the rain to kill the moss.

I have used the zinc strip towards the peak of the roof in Michigan. It will take a couple months for it to kill off existing, but will stop it for the next 5-10 years. Most lumber yards stock it just for this purpose.

We had a Monet tile roof in rainy Washington that grew moss like a lawn. I waited until it was a dry time of summer and swept the entire roof of the moss which was easy. Then I sprayed the 60-40 water/bleach mixture which killed what was left. The zinc strip we put beneath the ridge cap that stuck out 1" seemed to stop any more growth. 5 yrs later we still had no problem.

Ribbit,

Try 35% bleach/water solution with a pump-up sprayer. We just got through cleaning many homes in Mississippi covered with black and/or green mold due to Katrina. I know it wasn't exactly moss but the process worked well. Sometimes we had to go to 50-50 mix for stubborn areas. Try a patch on a scrap piece of shingle (if you have it) to make sure it doesn't bleach out the colors in the shingles. I don't think it will but maybe check to be safe....And finally, I know it goes without saying but be careful with the "hot" mixes of bleach/water--it will burn eyes and throat when you're exposed directly. And obviously inhaling high dosages can be lethal.

You need zinc to kill moss. Lilly-Miller has a product called Moss-Kill that I've used. Takes about two weeks to start killing. To prevent moss, they make a zinc strip that you put under the top row of shingles, with about an inch or so reveal. Moss won't grow since the rainwater leaches the zinc off the strip and coats the entire roof.

In Michigan, a copper strip is used the same way. The copper corrosion is copper sulfate. It is commonly used under wood shingles. I don't think I would use a pressure washer on asphalt shingles. It wood take the granules right off.
