Installed a Ben Franklin stove in the family room years ago and it had to go close to the walls ,in a corner.I had a sheet of steel formed to the shape of the back of the stove.I mounted the steel shield about 2 inches from the stove back and left the bottom and top open. The space drafts the heat up into the room and you can't even feel the heat behind the stove. There is a cold air return in the room and by running only the fan on the furnace,I can heat the whole house. It doesn't waste heat.

The other guys have said "Don't do it!" because fireplaces are an energy waster. True, but it depends on what you are looking for. Do you want to enjoy the warmth and charm of a fire as you snuggle on the couch with that someone special? In that case Go for it.

Or are you looking for a heat source? In that case go with a wood stove. I have a Vermont Castings woodstove that has glass doors that allow you to see and enjoy the fire. It heats my house.

Whatever you do, follow the manufacturers instructions to the letter. They are designed to keep you safe. DO NOT cut corners on the install. Even with zero clearence units you still have to allow clearences for the flue pipe, usually around three inches from combustible. The pipe manufacturer will have fire-stop spacers to use when the pipe passes between floors, use them. I have seen too many folks that "save" a few bucks by leaving them out.

If you want to go with a woodstove, check with your homeowner's insurance company first. A lot of insurnace companys get real hinky when you mention woodstove.

Whatever you do, be safe

I used to work for a company that manufactured zero clearance fireplaces - and the best advice I can give you is: Don't do it! Big energy wasters. Did you know that glass doors on a fireplace only saved you 4-6% energy? Go to the most efficient heating system you can find and forget fireplaces.

If you really want to play with wood, get a woodstove they really warm you up. Or go with a wood furnace addon ,but that is a pain if it is downstairs as mess and haulin in wood.
Thats all we heat a 2000 + sq ft house.Looking for a way to get hot water from it to.
