engine hoists - what do I look for?

I see lots of 4000# hoists around town. All look about the same. I like the idea of a higher grade hoist like CarQuest unit $425 but for half that I can go Chinese at Farm Store.

Removable extension legs look like good feature so it packs in corner. Hard to tell about the construction quality but my guess is that the $200 units use lighter tubing, lower quality lift cylinder, etc.

My NAPA floor jack is handy but only slightly above the tool truck level of quality.

Anything Chinese I would derate by half at least.
You can always take a mike with you to the store and check the metal thickness. I believe one of the reasons Chinese stuff is cheaper is because it's not heat treated properly which means softer metal. One less operation equals less cost to manufacture.

Hello,
I have one that looks identical to that that I bought in Napa or somewhere for a couple hundred. It is built decently. I bought it 5-6 years ago.

I have one that I got at Grizzley and it is (just ok)
it does the job but not much more.. I later bought an overhead winch from HFT 880 # rating for I think it was $79 Mounted it in my shop and it is the handiest thing I have aquired lately.. They have a 1300# model for a little more money.. I mounted mine on one of the trusses with drop down legs on either side and can drive car truck ect between them makes a slick lift. I just wish sometimes that it had a little slower speed.

I bought a $125 model from auto store. Chinese. I would not lay under it and work on something but looks OK.

Figure for that money I can repair it a few times and decide what I want to see in a better one.

I like the idea of a A frame hoist and chainfall, someday.
