I have a round point shovel with a fiberglass handle. The handle has cracked down close to where it attaches to the shovel. I don't know how, wife was using, don't ask too many questions about stuff like this. My question for here is: What do I do with it? Throw it away? burn it out and replace with a wooden handle? Or can i get a replacement handle made of fiberglass? Anybody else have experience with this sort of thing? TIA.

I too broke my fiberglass shovel (er, spade). I took handle out inserted a wooden rod into the hollow fiberglass where it cracked and reinserted. So far so good. Apparantly the fiberglass is thin walled and I think the wooden handles are stronger. Maybe next time I'll stick a metal handle in and see how that works.

can barely buy a handle for what a new shovel costs, when it breaks throw it away.. Mine has had a nasty crack about 18" long in the handle for about 3 years now, waiting on it to break, but it's still going strong..

Hi Logan,

Any chance of cutting it off above the crack and making a shorter handled shovel of it? (Actually it's a spade, although almost nobody calls it that anymore.) It would still be useful for many jobs, or for a smaller person to use, and with less leverage, not so likely to crack again.

Where do you live in SE Texas? My dad was born in Beaumont, and grew up in a small town called Woodville in the Big Thicket. I visited it once about 20 years ago. I'll say this---it's different from the Pacific NW.

Stan

Replacement handles are available, either wood or fiberglass. It has been my experience that the price of a replacement handle is nearly equal to the price of a complete new shovel.

Real good heavy electricians tape, not the thin cheap stuff. Wrap it up good and it'll run you a good while longer
