i have a 1996 gmc with a 6.5 turbo diesel in it. gmc had the wonderful idea of using a rubber filled front pulley/crank pulley/ harmonic balancer. the rubber get hard brittle cracks falls out the truck runs good i like the motor but i am getting sick and tired of replacing them once a year. i have probed local parts stores (who are convinced one doesnt exist as it isnt in the computer) but have been looking for a fluid liquid dampner that will last the rest of the life of the engine. i know they very well could be 300 dollors + but at 100 for the rubber junk every year it would be worth it i believe anyone know somone who makes them?

If you have to use another the same you can try coating it with silicone sealer ( hi temp ) . I have had success with this in industrial applications where heat and oil were eating rubber bearing mounts. good luck !

We have a C2500 Suburban with the 6.5 diesel, mileage 207,000. No failures yet on the HB pulley--should I be taking a look at it??

change it immediately. when the motor goes from up stroke to down stroke there is a hammering sound and action can break cranks, wrist pins, blocks etc etc. harmonics vibration etc nasty things after all a womens voice can break glass imagine if the right frequency goes through your block

I'll take a look at it today--does it have a similar setup as the small block chevy gas engine? Remove large nut on crank and then set up a puller to get it off? Does it have the tapped holes for the puller bolts?? What's the best place to buy--chevrolet or aftermarket??

Thanks for the info.

the serpentine pulley has never been a problem jsut the dampner itself. been replaceing lately with genuine chevy but see no difference betweeen chevy replacement and the cheap knock offs. i live in salt country and it is on the work truck maybe manure is eating at it? urine is acidic and eats at skid steer tires maybe that is what is eating them? salt off the road? dont know now the wifes 6.5 doesnt have the problem but she jsut pulls trailers at most doesnt run aroudn the farm yard much? dont know just know i want something taht i dont have to constantly replace.

that is weird.....i have a 95 k3500 with the 6.5. it has 200,000 on it. put an alternator on it at 150k, a starter at 170k and an injection pump at 180k. only problems with the truck. do all the maintenance like clock work. checked my pully after reading this and mines fine. called the dealer and they have never replaced one. we don't use salt out here in SD though either.

There must be something else wrong. I put a 6.5 in my 84 suburban (no turbo) in about 96. I have driven it about 100,000 miles with no trouble at all. Maybe some one can tell me why the old 6.2 I had to replace broke a wrist pin at a 180,000 miles.

AFAIK, the "fluiddamper" aftermarket outfits don't touch the 6.2 or 6.5 applications, likely because of the reputation of those engines for breaking crankshafts and main bearing web failures.

Are you having to replace the actual damper, or the serpentine belt pulley that bolts to the damper (and also is rubber-mounted)?

My 1994 6.5 TD has never had a damper failure, but the rubber-mounted serpentine pulley failed at about 180,000 miles.

Are you using genuine GM replacements, or generic imported chinese units from an auto parts store?

Also, it has been often stated by "experts" that a worn, sloppy, timing chain increases the torsional stresses on the crankshaft, and therefore on the torsional damper.

One more thing to check - make sure you don't have any oil leaks on the front. My '96 had a balancer let go after getting oily....new GM part and it has been fine ever since.
