Hello, I have a new 6 acre pasture that I am trying to irrigate here in very dry NC. I have a creek that borders the pasture, will a trash pump generate enough PSI for a rain gun style sprinkler? Most trash pumps are measured in volume per hour, is there a way to predict the PSI. I purchased the Sime river model from agri supply.

Any thoughts?

I had a pressure washer pump that died so I saved the 5.5 HP engine, coupled it to a 2" discharge Pacer pump & I pump water from a creek. Mostly I use it to irrigate about 7 acres of pasture. I can run several lawn sprinklers in my yard about 600 ft run and about 50 ft elevation from the pump. I ran 1-1/2" abs line with hose connections every 100 ft. I went to Agri-Supply (there"s one in Garner) and got the heavy duty Rain Bird sprinkler heads and installed them on homemade, portable stands about 6" tall. It"s dry here in western NC, too but we were flooded 3 weeks ago so I haven"t run the pump latly. Each sprinkler is good for about an 80 foot radius. Send me an e-mail and I can send more info if you want it. As for permits, I"ve never heard of them in NC for a non-commercial operation that"s this small.

Your raingun should have the gpm and pressure specs with it or be able to get them, compare them to your pumps gpm@psi. Our trash pump is a 8hp with a 3in outlet, it will do about 10-15psi on 3in. You can reduce down for your pressure but might lose to much gpm for your rain gun to work.
You might be able to find an old/used centrifugal pump at a salvage/junkyard and a briggs (etc) motor and do better. Youll need to know something about the rpm-gpm-psi of the pump to run it with a gas engine.

I set up everything today, Sime "river" sprinker on a 6' foot stand and a 3" trash pump reduced to 2" at the output and then 2" discharge hose to 1 1/2" at the sprinkler stand.
I must not be generating enough pressure as the sprinkler has a radius of 40' compared to the 80' capability.

I may have to revert back to lawn sprinklers, these Sime sprinklers are nice, but expensive, and I don't know of a way to increase pressure.

Are some pumps better at creating pressure rather than volume. My 3" trash pump is rated at 15,000 gph.

Any thoughts?

You will probably need a centrifugal pump. Trash pumps don't generate much pressure. I don't know the sprinkler you have but I would guess it will require around 30 to 60 psi at around 100 gal per minute to work. Large sprinklers can require 600 to 1000 gal per minute at 60 to 100 psi.
Look at the label on the sprinkler or call the manufacturer and ask how many gallons per minute and at what pressure it requires for a given amount of inches of water per hour delivered.

If you are running the delivery line any distance to the sprinkler you want to use the largest size line you can manage to keep the pressure drop down.

Be careful about pumping water out of a creek. In my area you need to have permits etc to do so.
