I'm building a log splitter with 9 hp briggs vangaurd. I can't find a pump to motor bracket for that motor. It looks like I'm going to end up fabricating something. How forgiving are lovejoy connections if the shafts aren't 100% lined up. Or better yet, does any one know where i can find a pump bracket for the 9 hp vangaurd? It has a 4" and a 5" 4 bolt pattern in I measure criss cross. thanks

Have you considered adapting a old automotive driveshaft and universal? It will have no problem with 9hp and take the offset. Or maybe parts for a tractor to mower drive shaft. You can find all kinds and sizes of universals and couplings at Tractor Supply or other ag suppliers.

There is another type of shaft coupling that can be found at most surplus houses or Motion Industries its called a para-flex coupling and will take a little mis alignment far better than a jaw type love joy coupling.

I did something similiar when I put a 5h briggs on my trailer to run the winch. Wanted electric also so I couldn't use any of the off the shelf adapters. (they wouldn't allow a pulley to run the alternater) Used slotted holes and lined things up afterwards. Worked ok but things need to be lined up pretty close or the insert gets chewed up pretty fast. Chain couplers won't stand much misalignment either.

Alternatively try the link I have included for Burdens Surplus. They are my first goto source on projects for this kind of stuff.

I couldn't tell you.

Suggest you call their tech line. They are pretty good with help.

Another place worth checking is Northern Tool.

Another option is two sprockets and double chain, but alignment is still the key to good results. Shims might help.

Lovejoy coupling like to be aligned pretty close. The elastomer elements walk around and wear bad if the coupling is out of alignment. Rexroth used to make a coupler called an Omega that looked like two halfs of an orange ball. The were much better at tolerating some misalignment.

ive got the chain and sprocket on mine. used a double 60 and havent had to tighten but maybe 3-4 times in the 15 years we have used it. i pour a little bar and chain oil on it as it idles (always habdy if the splitter is out) each time i use it. Plus we use 100s and 100s where i work on our pumps, im not real keen on them because of alignment.
