What gasket remover do you like to use? What works best on old gaskets that are really stuck fast. Need to remove gaskets from aluminum blower housing. Tried wire wheel but was slow going and was eating away aluminum around bolt holes.

We used to use "Chisel" brand gasket remover on turbine related equipment - it's NOT skin friendly!!!! As a back up, try Arm & Hammer Oven Cleaner. Supposed to be the same stuff but nat as strong. I don't know what it'd do to alumium, though.

On aluminum crankcases I make a scraper out of aluminum flat stock. This way I can scrape as hard as needed to get the gasket off but no aluminum gets scraped off.I sharpen it on the belt sander.

I know not to use chlorinated products on aluminum, didn't know about not using anything else. I was trying the old putty knife but I need to make up some decent scrapers. My cousin who has an auto shop uses a rod with a wooden handel. hole drilled and tapped on end that holds a square carboloy insert that is used in machine work. I like the idea of the aluminum scraper. Thanks for the help.

Piece of copper tubing flattened and sharpened works good too.
