Question for T_Bone on Tig welders

T_Bone,

I recently aquired a Miller Intellitig 4 welding high frequency unit. I got it at a very good price (almost free) and am trying to figure out what kind of welder/power supply I can use it with. I'm on a strict budget here and would like to know what all I would need to set this thing up to use.

I do have a decent MIG welder and an A/C Lincoln 225 stick welder. I don't have any DC welder (other than the wire feed MIG) and there in lies the problem. I need DC with the Intellitig.

I can also get for cheap if I want it a Maxstar 175 which is a 480 3 phase unit. Unfortunately I don't have 3 phase at all, just 220 single phase. So I don't think there is much I can do with this welder. Darn!

Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Brad

Hi BKahler,

I've never used a IntelliTig 4 but I did download the user manual from Millers website and I strongly urge you to do the same as the unti has some jumpers that need to be set.

Looks to a be a DC only HF unit that can handle 250aDC for a external machine. Control voltage at 115vac/230vac.

Can be used SMAW or DC GTAW and while in the GTAW a choice of manual, semi-auto, or fully automatic. 24vac remote control available. Comes with the remote pendant or stop/start/purge control for automatic control.

You can program 16 different modes to control slope, ramp up time, intial current, peak current, post/pre gas flow.

The pluse mode appears to be a spot only weld mode.

Programs can be linked together.

After skim reading the 80pages I don't see where it prohibits AC/HF orperation so it may well be suited for DC/AC HF. I'd ask Miller to make sure there wouldn't be any harm to the unit.

From the above any AC/DC machine would work on with the unit provided you didn't try to apply more than 250a maximum.

E-mail me on the MaxiStar.
