Just got back from looking at a friends well. The well lost volume and pressure over a couple days. I pulled the line off the pipe up from the pump and ran the pump. Instead of the strong stream I had seen when we had it off a couple years ago, it barely peed a stream a few inches. And the water was heavily loaded with sand. Any ideas where to go from here?

Hello Chris, I spent most of My life drilling water wells here in W.va, OH,and KY, but it is some what of a dieing thing here. Unless You get down toward the rivers sand is not a problem here. If the pump is not pumping volume as it should most likely the propellors in the pump(submersible I would guess) are damaged from the sand,If I were You I would try an save a little money and replace only the pump end. As far as raising the pump up a few feet goes, thats fine but keep in mind the well is not only a water source but also a storage tank, every time You raise the pump to solve the problem without cleaning the well out You loose that much more volume standing in the well. For a shallow well like Your speaking of You can build a sand sucker and clean the well out Yourself with a little ingenuity. If I can be of any help just holler, Good Luck. Jim Edmonds jr

Chris, our community well (9 homes) finally went dry a couple years ago. We're in the Buckley, WA area, and as near as we could figure it was due to the Nisqually quake in early 2001. Well had been 120 ft deep with 40 ft of water in it, but ended up 110 ft with 5 ft of water. New well is 140 ft with over 60 ft water, about 300 ft away and about 25 ft lower elevation at the surface.

Chris as others have said the pump maybe history, but it could also have the screen pluged or ate out. Another thought is if you pull the pump and then use 1" pvc pipe that will reach the bottom of the well conected to a 120 cfm or bigger air compresser you can blow that sand out and also recoup the well depth. Have recovered a dozen or more this way, You have to have water in the well to do this, just be prepared for the big blow of sand and water. Now if you see a lot of pea gravel coming out you are below the casing and bringing up the gravel pack, so stop blowing it at this time and try the pump. Had a well driller on a 125' well could only get 1 1/2 GPM and after I blew it they had 9 GPM, that was 15 or so years ago and it is still going along with all the others I did this way. It will also open up the water channels. If it still sands in after this you will have to raise the pump up 4' or so, but in time it might sand in the perfs. If it is steel casing through some pea gravel down the well and let it sand blast the perfs open, BUT if it is PVC don't try the pea gravel.

Forty year ago had to blow out our well, 106' deep and was getting sand and pea gravel, this was before the plastic pipe and used steel pipe, so long ago don't remember size but was probably 3/4" and the compresser when it was opened would shoot the water and dirt as high as the windpump derric, repeated the cycle several times and never any more problems.

How deep is the well? Jet pump or submersible?
Could be sanding in on you and need bailing out by a good well service outfit. Sometimes if the standing water is high enough you can lift the pump up about 5' and get by. If it's a submersible the sand could have ate the impellers up as well.

The well is around 50-55 ft. The pump is in the bottom of the well. Can we just pull the pump up 5 ft and re secure it to the casing cap? Sounds like its worth a try if that would work.

Yup. Around here most of the time if the sand found it's way in to the deep well (hole ate through the screen or casing), it's toast, need a drilling rig & start over....
