homelite xl2 starting

I received an old xl2 from my parents. I filled it with fuel and attempted to start it, but it wouldn't. I drained the fuel, pulled it a few times and it started, ran for about 30 seconds and quit. I put fuel in, it wouldn't start. I drained it, it started and ran for 30 seconds. Same thing a couple of more times. What is the problem?

Sounds like your getting too much fuel and flooding it. Might be the carb is bad and letting excess fuel run into the cylinder. A good diaphram will draw in air thru a cracked fuel line and the thing won't run at all. BTW, I think you have an XL2. Or is it an XL12? Haven't been able to find mine for a while.

Dannie's right,
I'd start at the fuel supply. Replace the fuel filter, fuel line, (might have cracks) carb kit etc...work your way towards the piston. Don't forget the the gaskits and insulator block. There is a vent in the fuel tank that might need to be replaced. I drill them out to see if this is the problem. Nothing expensive yet. I took apart one of my saws that had set for years and would not run and just removing and replacing the rings cured it. No new parts at all. Worst case would be if the crank gaskits need to be replaced. Good luck and let us know.

Your carb is gunked up. Real simple...tear it apart and clean it out with B-12.

Check vent in gas cap,check fuel line from tank to carburator,check choke to see if open & close.It may need a carburator kit or a filter in tank.
