Looking at your previous question, I guess you want to know if the charger is working. You can put your digital meter in series but not recommended as the shunt in digital meter may not take prolonged high current. What ever you do - Do not put digital meter across the charger on the AMPS scale as you will soon have a burned up digital meter and charger. Just to verify charger is working - use the DC volts scale and read battery voltage without charger -should be less than 12 volts and then measure again with charger connected and voltage should increase up to 14 volts or so.
On your broken meter - depends on whether the meter has an internal shunt or external shunt in the charger. Probably has an internal shunt as that is the least expensive. You might find a surplus meter or even a real amp guage from an older car that will substitute for the meter.
