just wondering if anyone has built a lean to off there pole shed years after they'd built the original shed...i applied for a permit to build about a 20 x 80 addition off the north side..i figure given the price of materials, it was cheap alternative...its 14' at the high and it'll be around 8' at the low...any advice appreciated...i'm a little unsure how to attach the 2x8 on the high...any experiences doing this?

I'm sure you checked, but 8 feet high entrance seems kinds low..how would you get in there with a cab of a tractor?

Check into plywood "I" joists. They're stronger than 2 x and I think may be cheaper and you can get them any lenght and several widths. You still have to solve the hanging problem though. when I add my lean to I'm using the I joists

If you can give me the snow loading for your area (in psf, i.e.: 20 psf or 30 psf or 40 psf) I can size the rafter options for you. Also, what is the predominant lumber type for your area, spf or Douglas Fir, Yellow Pine, etc.

2x8sMaybee the info could be found on the computer also. by 20 feet seem to be too skimpy to me.There are tables in some how to books that will tell you how big a rafter should be for the length and how far apart you put them and how much snow load you have and what quality of lumber you are using. I would make sure you build it tuff enough the first time.

i guess based on the trusses existing on the menards type pole building 2x8 truss. when i built the original 40x80 i asked for heaviest duty truss they made... maybe 2x8 cross brace ain't enough...i think it waas for 40 lbs on the main shed? in the 12-15 years since i built the original shed, theres been very little snow stayin on the roof. i guess thats why haven't been as concerned about it aas i should

my slope is 3/12 also..yeah i was wondering if joist hangers could be sufficient onto a ledger board with some angle bracing...my roof #truss is going to be 2x8 24' long with 11 rows of perlins, then tin...

another option, i think would give it more strength (but a lot more work for me) is to cut the tin on eave side, and tie into existing rafters...

i just would like to do the least labor intensive/inexpensive and yet not have the roof come down on me while playin with my farm toys..... (real men don't call em toys i guess)

The new ones I know of use joist hangers to hold the rafters up. They are nailed to the top header. Check with a building supply store(not a retail store). They might make a angled one to fit your slope

I am in the process of doing the same thing. Shed 14 ft high and 64 ft long. Building contractor hasn't given me a price so guess I will do it myself. He has talked me into going with a 3/12 pitch so I will have more hight. Only going out 15 ft. I thought I would use 3 inch angle iron on the outside of building for 2x10 rafters, bolted through the posts in two places about 18 inches apart where the 2x4 stringers are. If a rib is in the way, I will put a treated 2x6 with a cut out behind the angle iron. Think this will work?

I did that with joist hangers and 2x8's and the joist hangers have pulled away and need to be reinforced. If I did it over I would bolt to the pole in the original barn and rest on a cleat. I would also use right angle trusses. I got a book with all kinds of different trusses you can build from my county cooperative extension office.

say mike how far of a span did you have, and how far did ya space 2x8s...i'm going to bolt/knee brace/and joist hangers(this is all proposed unless one of you guys has a better idea)...the i joist idea is appealing but the price seems too high for me...
