Converting gas to electric wood spliter in reply to Lou, 10-20-2005 13:01:06
Rule of thumb is 1 electric HP equals 2 gasoline HP. However, be careful of those air compressor motors. Many are on a small 56 type motor frame & rated 5 hp. They will not produce 5 hp for a long duration & can easily 'stall out' under load. 5 HP electric motors draw about 30 amps at 240 VAC 1-phase.

My father in law converted his to electric and he thinks it works slick. A normal small engine runs around 2700 RPM so just make sure that you put a 3450 RPM motor on it rather than a 1750. He does most of his splitting outside the woodshed and it is much easier on his ears and he thinks smoother operating as well.

I believe Home Dumbo has them, however they only have about 2ton ram force and the gas ones are 5ton and up.

I was at a Menard's store today and saw they have an electric splitter. I didn't look at it closely, but a glance looked "light duty" to me. Also, my dad's woodsplitter motor was acting up and I suggested putting an electric motor on it. He did, and said it worked slower- no doubt because of less rpm's. I've never got to see it work, we used my spltter at his place this fall.

Just saw an ad on TV the other day. Mantis is selling one. I think this is the same Mantis that sells the little tillers.

Yes. There are some on Ebay, the folks that make the DRtrimmer etc, make one, and there's one called the "Swiftsplit" by the people that make the mantis. Hope this helps.
