Just got a new welder...

Just upgraded from a Century AC buzzbox to a Miller XMT 300. Bought it at an auction for $50! Replaced the power cord, switched it to single phase, and now I'm ready to weld. Here's the question - what do I need to be aware of that is different between AC and DC welding? What can I do with DC that can't be done AC? When do I use straight, and when do I use reverse? Do you use the same rod for both? Are there any special tips or tricks for DC? Also, all I ever used was 6011. I've been reading the praises of 7018 on this board and will have to try it out. Will this rod cover 80% of my needs? 90%? 100%? Thanks for any help and info you can give me about DC, I want to be a good welder with safe joints!

You are 1 lucky dog! Every time I go to an auction, 22-1/2 bidders jump straddle-legged on anything I want to buy.

Ya really, last good deal I came across was my Migmatic 200 (Cnd. Miller), was a month old and I paid $500 Cnd. in a distress sale, but nothing like $50!! Don't even bother with auctions anymore.

For years, I only had an AC welder and used only 6011 as you have. As a nonprofessional welder and welding only on occasion, it has been difficult for me to move into using other rods since I too now have an AC/DC machine. Your improved welder will be appreciated and I hope you can switch to other rods without difficulty. I envy those that can make the welds that both look and perform professionally. Good luck

Wow, that's quite a step up in the right direction. You're really going to enjoy the Miller. As for polarities, AC puts equal heat in the electrode and work, DC+ puts 1/3 heat in the work and 2/3 in the electrode, DC- puts 2/3 in the work and 1/3 in the electrode. DC gives you the advantage of using a wide range of electrodes. DC+ is used not only for mild steel, but aluminum, stainless steel, and cast iron. You can buy these specialty rods in small quantities.
7018, in my opinion, would be all you need for mild steel, it is a 70K psi (70), all-position (1)rod, with a low hydrogen (8)coating, and comes in various types that maximize certain qualities. 7014, and 7024 have an iron oxide coating that adds to the weld pool for faster deposition rates, hence the "jetrod" name. I personally use Arcweld 528MR which is their version of 7018, and am very pleased. Others have their own personal favourite, and it would be a good idea to try small quantities until you find "the" rod. Spend some time on the Lincoln site, here's the link to their rod selection page. Have fun!

Hi MO, DC is best for mild steel welding because of greater arc stability, weld puddle contour, welding ease most of the time, than does AC. Chemtron 7018 welding rod, used DCRP, is the best 7018 ever made, in my opinion.

DCRP= electrode positive (the rod holder) or also called reverse polarity
DCSP= electrode negitive or also called straight polarity

A/C has no polarity. AC oscillates between postive and negitive and is why it's used to weld alumnium as it cleans the metal on each oscillation.

Lincoln 6010 or P5, DCRP for clean mild steel,

Lincoln 6011 DCRP for clean mild steel
AC or DCSP for glavanized my 1st choice

Lincoln 6013 DCRP, AC.

If welding flat or horzontial, Lincoln 7024 or jet rod used DCRP. They don't call it jet rod for nothing as it welds very fast and flat.

It's the rod flux, application and mfg. that determines the first choice or only choice of type of welding current.

The rod numbers are defined as follows: Example 7018
First two numbers is the rated tensil strength in thousands
70/18 would be 70,000psi tensil strength

Third number is weld postion 1= All positions, 2= flat & horzontial postion, 3= flat only
70/1/8, with 1 being all welding positions.

Fourth number is the type of rod flux coating. there's ten so I will not list them all.
701/8= 8 being a iron powder coating

You can make a certified welds with DC or AC.

I included this info that I had already posted as a guide line and answers your questions.
Great buy on the Miller. Should be a dandy!

Thanks for all your information T_Bone.

My late husband had a Lincoln 225 in the shop here that I did'nt sell because I like to use it to jump start my Datsun diesel pickups on cold mornings when Shotzee (he's my seeing eye dog) and I go over to Mickey D's for the breakfast special.

Thanks again for the welding information I did'nt know it was also a welder. I thought this Lincoln was just a super duty battery charger for diesels.

Hey I got one of them Datsun diesel's too. Reckon you can come and crank mine when it's cold. It sho don't like the cold. Runs like a sewing machine when it gets warmed up though.

Maybe I need one of them riding partners like you got. Teach him how to bark on command, seeing as how my horn don't work.

Do you have to siphon diesel out after a while to keep it from running over like I do? I think it makes the stuff. Well at least compared to the 350 chevy.

I was wondering what kind of dog Shotse is. Maybe it would be easier to just ride him than crank a pickup. Then parking would'nt be a problem either.

It's a pity she has a diesel cause in another post she said Micky D causes ole Shotse to get gas.

I bet that Datsun would be cheap to run sho nuff on methane power.

Yeah man, Between me and the wife eating beans, we could go to Californy.

Does old Shotsie do the driving or just give directions?

This dog my wife has aint nothing but an over grown rat. It's more trouble than both younguns put together.

Maybe we can soon find out about old Shotsie!

Yep them over grown rats are something. One of my friends has a toy poodle that is over 19 years old.

She's kinda hard of hearing and gets around pretty slow anymore. She sounds like a foghorn sometimes and pants alot.

They must be in about the same shape because her dog does the same things.

Thanks T Bone. Appreciate the info. One more quick question, though. I was set to sell the buzzbox, but after your reply I'm wonderin if I should keep it? Will it provide something that the DC won't? Thanks again.

Hi MO, If I was in your shoes it would gather dust in the corner of the shop. I think once you get into your new machine the other one is history.

Thats a fine machine!
