I went on an interview last week and the guy asks me this question. "do you ever get angry at work" I said no everyone at the XYZ company gets along like family. Then he says, "if your boss did not help you then would that make you mad" I said no, I would just get someone else to help me. The guy was a bit of a jerk, and I have not heard back from their company. What would you guys have said with that question.

I would have said what kind of a question is that? Interviewer acts like a queer to me.

thanks guys, I am studying up on the dumb question in reply to Midwest redneck, 10-19-2005 02:19:30
I got a book from the local library that lists a lot of questions that may come up during an interview. I have to rehearse these questions. What is really sad is that the interview process has become a mind game to see how to trip you up on dumb questions. I would really like to email the *ickhead that interviewed me last week and say, hey a**hole, I reallly dont want to work for an idiot like you if you are going to ask me off the wall stupid questions at work, and to top it off the guy was of Spanish decent so it was hard to under stand him.

I sat in on a panel type interview and one of the questions asked was "How well do you get along with your present supervisor". If the candidate expressed any negative or hostile comments he was deducted points. I am glad I hired on 16 years ago when all they wanted to know was what could I do.

I interveiwed for 3 jobs 5 1/2 years ago, one was by a punk kid of whom I could tell was new to what he was doing, he asked "what do you want to be when you grow up?" I answered "your boss". No job there, didn't want anyway. second interveiw the guy was real big on professional business ethics and political correctness. "What would you do if you caught someone stealing something out of your car?" I do believe they would walk a wide circle around my truck anytime they were in the same lot as it, in the future". No job there, couldn't tolerate that clown for very long.
The third interveiw the guy asked me if I had an idea of what he was looking for. I said I assume your looking for results instead of a dog and pony show. I guess after 5 1/2 years I haven't let the guy down yet!

'neck,

These sort of questions I call "poke 'em with a stick" questions. The interviewer is trying to get a reaction. The actual answer you give is less important than how you react to the question.

Good luck with your job search.

Sounds like Firestone after the Japense bought it ,they would during the interview ask you to design and build a bridge , and explain the consept of your design

this guy must have gone to Harvard, and the job was a position they didn't really want to fill, you know how that is, do you think he could read and write?? some of them can't, they were on the foot ball program maybe, the college system produces so many more "smart" people than the economy could ever use in a 100 years, but they still need to make a hundred thousand the first year out of school without knowing anything about anything, they think they are on the free program..

I was asked the "do you ever get angry" question when I interviewed for the job I have now. My response to that was "yes, I get mad sometimes, but when I do I chew bubble gum" and the boss asked me why I chew bubble gum and I responded "I blow really big bubbles until the anger goes away and that way I managed to keep my mouth shut and not say anything until I get over being mad" - I got hired 15 years ago and for Christmas that year, boss man gave me a big bucket of bubble gum - thought I should maybe start looking for a new job, but so far so good.....
another response to that same question that was given to boss man was "yes, I get mad, but when I do, I go wash my face with cold water and if I am still hot after that, then it must be something in need of addressing so I hunt down the person in charge and discuss it with him/her." Anyway, good luck with the interviewing process - but boss man told me that the bubble gum response left quite an impression on him and that is part of the reason I got hired.

That sounds like one of the baseline questions for a polygraph (lie detector) exam. The polygraph examiner will ask some questions that he believes everyone should answer "Yes" to. Like "Have you ever, in your life, stolen anything?" or "Have you ever exceeded the speed limit?". If you were to answer "NO" to any baseline questions, the examiner considers you an untruthful person and it counts against you. The interviewer might have assumed that everyone gets mad at work sometime and if you say "No", you might say anything to get the job. He might have been looking for an answer like, "Sure I get mad sometimes but I've learned to turn that angry into productivity."

Yeah that family crap is a bit of nonsense there are a few people there that I would like to see get hit by a truck. But there are a few that are very good friends.

I have done a fair amount of interviewing from the other side of the table. The question is designed to find underlying issues that you may have with stress, frustration, getting along with co-workers etc. Your best bet with a question like this is to try and turn it around into a positive. For example, "During stressful times, when a tight deadline is nearing, I avoid getting angry, I meet with my boss to discuss the progress of the project." or "When I feel frustrated from lack of support by my team, I take a break for a few minutes, gather my thoughts and deal with the situation in a professional manner."

There is a book available at the library called, 'Sweaty Palms: The Art of Interviewing", gives a lot of useful information on interviewing techniques and how to best answer those "shoot yourself in the foot" type questions.

Good Luck.
