What can I use for coolent for my Jet cutoff saw that won't freeze in the winter. We have been using a water based cutting fluid but it is expensive and freezes. The saw is in an unheated shed. What about kerosene, diesel fuel, Wd 40. or what else? Any suggestions?

I use windshield washer fluid for the coolant in my valve grinder. Hadn't thought of WD-40, that might be better.

At the machine shop I work at, we cover the saws w/ plastic and then put a space heater underneath to keep them warm.

At home to keep the hyd oil warm on our 165 for the loader, we have a magnetic heater, about 5x6" or so that sticks to the reservoir and we just keep it plugged in when it's parked. Works out pretty good.

Why not keep the same coolant and try using one of those little immersion heater deals like they use in bird baths, etc to keep them from freezing? For that matter a high wattage bulb or possibly even a heat lamp positioned directly over the coolant tank would probably do the job on all but the coldest days. Either way you went the cost for the power shouldn't be enough to make much of a difference in the power bill.

There is such a thing as food processing oil that butchers use in the meat markets, but I don't know if it would work or be expensive?? Never hurts to ask. I know it won't freeze.

I would not use anything flammable.... I guess you could use cutting oil, like you thread pipe with.. If you want to use it, I would try a little bit first, to make sure the pump will move it. Also, the sulphur in cutting oil might damage the pump , over time...
