Has anyone had the guts to try one of the cheap Chicago Electric type winches that Harbor Freight sells or any of the other no-name ones on ebay? If so, what has been your experience?

I have one of those $49.00 cheepie winches on my trailer although I built my own relay box & remote cable, the winch does ok. but it doesn't have any kind of braking system, while unloading off of my trailer the winch wants to creep, I don't like this, I was also considering going to an small Super Winch or Warn myself. But I don't know what to go with now? Dave F.

I have had a HF 8000 lb winch on my trailer for about 5 years. I use it quite a bit, it seems to be a clone of a Ramsey winch. Having looked at both of them they appear to be identical. They [both] have a problem if they are overheated from extended heavy loads, however its fairly easy to remedy. They have cheap plastic brush holders which swell when overheated, causing a loss of power or the winch to fail to work altogether. However its an easy fix, pull the motor off, remove the end cover to expose the brush holders and use a small file to remove enough material to stop the binding on the brushes. I have had to do this a couple of times with mine and once with a friends and it always seems to work fine. It makes me wonder how many winches have been tossed or motors replaced when a little file work would have repaired the problem.

I bought one from Northern a couple years ago. Paid about a hundred bucks all told. It has worked ok but is slow and does not have the ease of use or the other features that a more expensive winch would have. But for the few times I have used it to pull things onto my trailer it sure has paid for itself! Now lets hope I have not jinxed myself as I need to use it today to load a plow!

I don't own one yet, but I have done my homework, and found that the good ones all use minimum 3/8 inch cable, the cheepie ones, with the same rated capacity, use 5/16 inch cable. Now, how can two different winches have the same rating, when one of them uses light duty cable? I will be saving my money until I can afford the REAL heavy duty winch.

Mike,
I have a 8,000 or 9,000 pound one (I can't remember which) I bought from HF about a year and a half ago. I use it all the time when I haul round bales on my trailer. I just throw it up over the top of the bales and hook it on the back of the trailer and pull it up tight. It works great.

Also, about 3 or 4 years ago I had a 1500 lb. SuperWinch brand Winch on my ATV. It only lasted one year and the motor fried. What a piece of ****! They're supposed to be such a good brand. I bought one of those cheapo $49.99 specials at HF. It was rated at 2,000 pounds, has a larger diameter cable and has 50 feet of cable instead of 25 feet like the SuperWinch had.
It's still going strong yet. Go figure??

Yeah, but the thing is, that you could get another one, using the same catalog and the same stock number, and it would be a total pile of S$$t. Of course, the Chinese made "American" ones are just as hit and miss as far as quality goes.
