Are there any DIY plans out there to build a utility vehicle like a Kawasaki Mule or John Deere Gator as an option to laying out big bucks for what seems to be a toy? Please point me in the right direction, as the grandkids are wanting a ride.

An old riding lawnmower with a cart can be had for $100 or less, and will give many hours of enjoyment. I"ve built several for my nephews and children of my friends. With proper supervision (after the first hour, this consists of looking out the window whenever you hear "crunch" to see what they ran into this time....) they can be an enjoyable kid"s ride in their own right. I remove the mower deck and install a throttle limiter, plus disabling all forward speeds but first or second. They aren"t pretty, but I"ve never had a kid complain about the looks yet!

WE lost a 12 and a 14 year old, girls this weeek, in the neighborhood. They were 4 wheeling it, blew out of the woods, onto the roadway, right into the path of a young mother with three kids in her car. Crash was unavoidable. Funerals are tomorrow and Monday. Fortunately, I get to do the sound technician job. Think what the preacher is going thru now. What can you say to comfort a greiving family, not to mention a whole community? SUPERVISION IS FAR MORE THAN LOOKIN' OUT THE WINDOW ONCE IN A WHILE.... Kids have no sense of time, distance, closing speeds, danger, etc. I've been a Driver Ed teacher 32 years, ask how I know!

This happens all the time but 99% of the time it's operator error ,the gene pool has ways of cleaning it's self .

I've done the same thing with old riding mowers. In some cases I moved the muffler to help prevent burns and revised the belt-tightener clutch so it has to be pressed to make the thing go. If the kid falls off the vehicle stops.

Cheap fun! To quote Garrison Keilor on National Public Radio - "Nothing you do for a child is ever wasted!"

A good used golf car is fine for this if riding children is the sole mission of the vehicle. They are cheaper to buy. You can buy one for probably what you'd spend to build something. Electric is good as long as you are near an outlet and can let the batteries recharge. However this does take time. Gas power is best for the non stop riding like kids want to do at the fastest possible speed. Ask me how I know? 4 grandkids and 3 golfcars!
