If you look at table 310.16 in the nec it say's that nubmer 10 is good for 30 amps in the 60 degree columb, if you are using romex or uf cable you go off the 60 degree columb, the 80 percent if the rating for continous load which we still go by but they kind of got rid of it in the code book, but we still keep the load at 80 percent, if it's a long run you will want to run larger wire...

You could also interpert the code as saying a 30 amp circuit breaker but only loaded up to 80% of that or 24 amps.If the circuit drew more than that it would be 8awg.You use only 80% of a circuit breakers rating.So 10 awg on a 30 amp breaker is 24 amps max.

10 gauge is good for 30 amps . But it drops as the lenghth gets greater . 8 gauge is 40 amps . Just make sure all connections are tight . Ken

Found this info on this forum:

"My 1999 National Electrical Code book (when I wired my house...) says 10 AWG wire ampacity (with no more than three current carrying wires in the raceway/cable) is good from 25A (for cable type TW,UF at 140 deg. F) up to 40A for the more common types of cable at 194 deg. F. Other, less common 10AWG wire types can handle 60-70W (probably meant to put an A here) at 400F! These figures do not take into account voltage drops across long distances of wire."

If you look in the code book you can't exceed the 60 degree columb in 310.16 so you can only run 30 in a 10/3 romex or uf cable, if you look at that table close it liste the smaller conductors as being limited in current for 14, 12, and 10 wire..

eveil was correct, he said approximate. It matters where the wire is and what style it is what it is used for and how far it goes.
Need lots more info for correct answer.

Voltage should not make any difference on the current carrying capacity(ampacity) of the wire. 10/3 should be good for 25 amp or a little better depending on use of wire.
