Looking to purchase an 18ft trailer to haul a Ford 641 as well as a car from time to time. Any preferences on wood versus all metal floor?

Since you said you are primarily going to haul wheeled vehicles, I would suggest a metal deck. Since trailers generally spend 99% of their time sitting unused and exposed in the yard, a metal deck will last longer with virtually no maintainence. A metal deck should last the life of the trailer. Try to find one with at least 10 guage diamond plate and a beavertail (angled rear portion) to make loading easier.

A wood deck is great for hauling palletized or other loose cargo as it will not slide around as easily an can be secured with blocks, screws, etc. It also requires more maintainence in the form of wood preservatives, paint, and eventual replacement.

Both wood and metal can be slippery when wet or icy. Just work safely and you'll be safe.

Just remember there is a reason why at least 99% of all over the road semi flatbeds and van bodies have wood decks.

i would really beg to argue with anyone who says wood is more slick then metal. smooth metal yes maybe. dimond plate or grating is 100 percent better then wood. wood is also very very slick depending on how you treat it if you treat the wood with used motor oil diesel fuel(i am not saying that is waht i do i am saying what i have seen) oil floats on water. when it rains it pushes all of the oil to the surface and makes for a huge mess and a oil slick. another thing to consider wet ramps that flip up get very very heavy for this old man too lift. ramps flip up and over real easy and nice but add water to them and they get alot heavier.

Mine has a metal deck, it's fine. Won't rot, it will rust.

My first trailer had a wood deck. It was a 16'car hauler. It was a great trailer, however after 5 years, several of the boards on the wood deck were begining to warp. They weren't treated, just plain pine boards.

The next trailer that I purchased had a metal deck. 18' car hauler with a dovetail. I love the metal deck. Yes, it's slicker than wood, but if you tie things down, then no problem. In fact, I haven't had any problems with this trailer.

It would be interesting to know the weight difference between a trailer with a wood deck and one with a metal deck. The more a trailer weighs, the less you can put on it. To me, that would be the only thing against a metal deck (if it's heavier).

The weight of a wooden bed trailer would be differant, depending on the type of wood used. White Oak is heavier (and stronger) than plain White Pine/Fir. I personally would like a wooden floor, you can screw smaller items, blocks, etc. down w/o too much trouble. Rich Iowa

Go with wood. A metal deck is slick even when it is dry. Very difficult to keep your cargo from sliding around, even when it is tied down properly.

Mike, I asked the same question couple years ago when I was looking for an trailer,I went with the wood trailer because their less slick when they get wet compared to the ones with steel decks something to think about, I've been overall happy with mine its a 14ft, dual axel, if my drive way wasn't so steep I would have like to have an 20 footer or longer.
