I am looking at a homemade steel trailer in an upcoming auction. The wheels are the open center type and appear to have brakes on the hubs. How can I tell if these are MH wheels/axles or true equipment trailer wheels /axles? I did not take note to see if the tires were stamped MH only. I want to do my homework before auction day.

Well tires are the only thing that really matter because I guess in some places you have to run the lowboy tires. look on the axles they should say either dexter or kelsy hays if they are the older axles that have the solid drum there as good as anything else you can get I've put a lot of miles on mobile home axles, grossly overloaded and NEVER had an axle failure, lost a lot of tires but i'm running free mobile tires not the lowboy tires and as far as you can't keep them tight thats bull if you get them tight and check them shortly after you take off and retighten they will stay tight (you should always check prior to a trip any lugs dosn't matter if mobile home or semi). just my thoughts and experiances mike

Why are the tires marked "Mobile Home Use Only"?
A couple of years ago I was at a place where they recycle the axles and send them back to the factory, all painted and ready to go again.
There was stacks of them on pallets. They said the axles were not for sale and the tires couldn't be used again, so I couldn't buy any even if I had my own axle. I seem to remember they could not/would not explain why.

hi Slowpoke yes the mobile tires are marked that way and whether leagel or not may depend on the state you are in i run them because i can get them cheap and they hold up fairly well, they dont wear as good as the lowboy tires but can usually get them for free. oregon washington and califonia hiway patrol have all told me on the phone no problem with tires wheels or axles as i had heard the same thing so i called before i went there. been using them here in or for 25 years and have never seen, heard of or been stopped or ? about the tires fwiw. mike

i have a 16ft gooseneck flat bed with 4ft beavertail that was made in okla in 1974 by shelby trl co and it has trailer house axles and tires and i have hauled everything you can on this traILER FOR THE LAST 25 years and still use it weekly here in central iowa. it has 8x14.5 tires onit and can have the mobile home dealers here in des moines fix the brakes or replace the axles and get rites with the rims fairly cheap.

I don't consider myself to be an expert on such matters but any wheel, hub, axle combination I've ever seen with that description has always been from a mobile home.
