a neighbor has a 5th wheel trailer with alko 12" brake shoes. When new, said he could skid it to a stop. The brakes do not stop as well as they used to. We jacked each wheel, and adjusted the shoes so they were just dragged as the wheel spun. He said that it still would not "lock" the brakes. We are working on replacing the shoes. Does the magnet get old from use? Should I replace the seals while I am in there? Is there a seal driving tool for a 3 3/8" seal?

thanks
Jack

Jack, If you have good shoes and they adjusted alright yet you still are not able to lock the wheels up then I would take a very fine emery and clean the magnet faces as well as the contact points of the magnet area. The smallest amount of rust will affect the response of the brakes. If that doesnt help then let us know and we will try harder. LOL

Easiest way to repair them is to replace with a complete new brake assembly. They aren't too hatefull in price,in fact about the same as buying shoes, magnets, hardware kits. They come completely assembled on a new backing plate. They were about $65 ea from Redneck trailer last year when I redid my gooseneck.Always replace the seals, which can be tapped in carefully with a small hammer.

About the seals. Always replace hub seals when they have been removed from spindle.

Yep magnets get old and worn and then don't work as well if at all. I've seen them so bad that you could see wires sticking out the sides of them.

GROUNDs Grounds GROUNDs

It's usually as easy(?) as chasing all the grounds where they attach to the frame, and that up to the coupler, and up the harness connector ground to the vehicle.

You need to make sure anywhere the ground from the vehicle makes a transition through the breakaway, and the frame, and again back out to the brakes is all up to snuff.

Run a real long wire from the battery negative to a meter, or test lamp in your hand and check all connections with brakes full energized. If you find a fault it should read out or illuminate a test lamp. (maybe)
