Just hooked up my new Tractor Supply 7 HP, 220v, dual piston (VT633500AJ) compressor made by Campbell Hausfeld . I've got 220v to the pressure controller panel on the compressor. But when I turn it on, the motor hums and tries to turn but won't. With the power off, I can spin the compressor and motor by hand, so I know the motor / compressor isn't locked. I think the most likely problem is that the pressure controller panel is bad. An comments or suggests for me before I call Tractor Supply and ask them to come and get it?

I have noticed no one has addressed the possiblity that it maybe wired for low voltage. Besure to check tag on motor and wires to make sure that it is wired inside for 240 voltage. Alot of these small compressors can be wired to run low or high voltage..Just a thought..Keith

Your service voltage between two legs may be 208 volt and not 220 volts.I know when that happens with 208 to a 240 volt unit a buck boost transformer is needed.Although Im thinking it should be ok at 220 fed by 208 but its not starting either.I would study the instruction book it should cover these problems and starter requirements.

If it is new, you need to return it to the seller and let him give you one that runs. Tinkering wioth it may void the warrantuy.

check to make sure your wire is large enough gauge from panel to compressor.too long and too small will not work.

Has this compressor ever ran anywhere else? What is all the nameplate data on the side of the motor, compressor frame and on the compressor it's self? Is there a cfm rating? What is the wire size, length back to the panel, size of panel and distance from the panel to the utility transformer? Which colour wires do you connected to what? If that's a real 7-1/2 HP 240V motor she will draw about 32amp running at full load. And about 150 to 250 amps for the few seconds from startup to full rpm.

I searched high and low, and cannot find a listing for a campbell-hausfeld of that p/n, no manuals, nothing. Closest I came was a VT630500

Anyhow, I don't think mag starters are used till you get to a true 7-1/2 hp model, and they come equipped with it, already installed. The straight 7 hp models i've seen at home depot were a CH compressor with a V-twin compressor, or an inline twin pump, either case, they didn't require a mag starter, as the straight 7 hp is 7hp STARTING hp, really only about 3 hp running hp. Not sure about TSC, haven't look there in awhile except at the IR compressors they have.

All of this hp BS was addressed by a class action lawsuit, which the lawyers won (and the consumers lost, if you get my drift), so if you read the label real closely, in tiny print under that 7 hp is something that says STARTING and also gives you the running HP, in real fine print.

It should be a matter of the two hot leads of the 240v to the pressure switch and the ground, no netural is needed, and it should run.

Sure does sound like the starter condensor cut out switch is stuck, or a condensor disconnected. This is warranty, you need to call CH and get some tech support before you tear into it.

With a 7hp motor you will need a starter. When I first read your question I missed that it was a 7hp. Your TSC store should have told you that. Also the owners manual should tell you that.

I have my doubts as to whether a TRUE 7 horse motor would even have enough space to sit on top of a TSC air compressor.

Often, the homeowner-grade compressors with the over-hyped HP ratings do not need a contactor.

But, certainly you would with a motor with a true HP of that much.

Make sure you are getting 220 volts at pressure switch. If you have 220v & still have trouble you will need to purchase a starter for the compressor motor. Your TSC dealer should have them in stock.

Good point. The start capacitor might just have a loose wire. I had a bad start capacitor on a fan recently and it would hum, and sometimes even run backwards, in most cases which ever way I spun the blade to get it started. Thats how I figured it was the start capacitor. Give the flywheel a helping start and if it starts running, look for something wrong in the start capacitor department.

Sounds like either you have the wires hooked up wrong or your not getting 220 votls to it. Your 2 hot leads should hook to the preassure switch and ground to the frame or ground terminal, which ever it has. My bet would be your not getting 220V but 110V which will burn the motor out if your not careful

Measure your line voltage at the compressor?

Is this a single phase or three phase motor?
Are the couductors big enough for the 7 h.p. motor? Just my thoughts.
