I plan to get started on my New house this fall in Michigan. Require 48" deep Foundation for Frost. Want to build the house on Monolithic Slab (one piece Slab/Walls/Footings). Question: to get started do I build up with sand, level it out then dig through this with my Backhoe to form my walls? If I am correct how high can I build up with Sand? Has anyone out there tried the Frost Protected Shallow Foundation in Michigan or other cold climate area?

Washer Dryer, Hot water tank, Water tank, Furnace, Two 275 gal fuel tanks, Electrical service panel, Work bench,Double stationary tube,Lots of storage area,just some of what i have in the basment. I build on a hill so I have a walk out basment, when properly insulated you cant beat a basment for space.

I would not recommend a slab home where you are living. No matter how deep you go, the frost line travels through the concrete. This will cause cracks in the floor, not to mention being very cold in winter time and making it hard to heat. In the south, it is done because of unstable soil and to help cool a house, not to mention the termnites and flooding. You don't have the termnite problem as the south does, so I recommend a basement home for to many reasons to mention.LOL

smark, scoot to the bookstore and grab a copy of a publication by Fine Homebuilding titled: Foundations and Concrete Work. It's published by Taunton Press. In it you will find detailed articles with great pictures that answer your questions exactly. Bottom line; can-do! Think about it: Dairy Barns and Free Stalls on slabs don't crack and blow-up, and how about train tracks laid on gravel beds?! Cellars are dark smelly places where no one goes. Build a solid slab and spend the rest of the cash on radient floor heating and a new shot gun!

Put that heating in the basement floor and you will not have a damp basement and most homes around here use that basement as anouther living room

As someone else mentioned, slab on grade foundations are common down south due to to the lack of frost. For a two story house, the footing is 12" x 20" deep and monolithic with the slab in S.W. Florida

Normally forms are placed around the outside edges so the top 10 inches or so will be above grade when finshed.

But the compacted sand is the form for inside edge and bottom of the footing. As long as its moist, it holds up well, although again its only 20" deep (12" below grade). We generally use two number 5 bars (5/12) in the bottom and wrap the 6 x6 welded wire mesh from the slab down in the thickened edge (footing).

Assuming you can address the frost issue, and as provided it meets code (your building code book will outline that), I see no reason why you can't do it, if thats what you want.

I think a basement would be better. I am in central southern Michigan, and have had water lines freeze 5 feet deep. I have heard of septic systems freezing! Talk about a crappy experience. The coldest i have seen it around here was -22. It was unconfortable, and my furnace was running all the time. I think Florida sounds better about then.

If you are from the south where slab houses are more common:

They aren't worth much up here in the northern areas. I'd reconsider.

If you need to go slab because that is all that works on your location: No idea how to build one, never seen it done up here. Only know of about 3-4 houses without a basement 'round here. Their floors are terrible cold.

I think the first thing I'd do is talk to the local building inspector. He or she will be able to tell you if monolithic slab or frost protected foundations are authorized in your area. It might depend on what part of the state you live in. Up here in the Upper Peninsula, frost can get down to 6-8 feet and an insulated slab may not work. If it is authorized, the inspector should be able to tell you how much compacted sand or depth of undisturbed earth as well as depth of gravel you need under the slab/footings. Although some don't like building inspectors, I found them readily giving out knowledge and opinions as well as being nice people. I just remember that they work for me. There are also numerous websites with information. For my two cents, when I built my house I went with a full basement. The first pour was the footings and slab, the second was the walls. The outside walls were sealed and insulated. I know I won't regret it as long as I live. Have fun.

Would not consider a house on a slab, too many problems, first one would be freezeing floors, next would be plumbing problems with heating and electricity problems, electrical wiring you should be able to come up from the bottom for each individual outlet or switch so that if a problem in any place you can just go to that junction box in basement and disconnect a couple of wires for the bad unit till it can be replaced, for slab you have to come down from top with no room to work also plumming from top for supply lines and how to keep then from freezing?

I agree on the full basement, and I'm sure it's done as you describe as what sounds like one pour, but how are the walls formed and not leak out the bottom ? Concrete usually requires, forming, placing and finishing, not to mention reinforcing, many things are designed, that are difficult or impossible to construct, something to keep in mind, but not to steer you away from it, it sounds different and a full basement is always a benefit.

Not being familiar with the conditions in your area, obviously, soil type, elevation of water, frost depth etc, play a key role in how you should construct a particular foundation. Underneath should be well compacted if not on top of undisturbed, well drained, and not attracting water say like if you excavated and filled with clean crushed stone, which is porous and would allow water to be trapped. Foundation drain pipe, usually a bed of crushed stone, perforated pipe, on both sides of the footing, working on the priciple of gravity to drain away is commonly designed.

If you plan to build up an area for a slab, you must excavate to good undisturbed, hopefully dry, and build up with a good material with many composite sizes in a sieve analysis, sand is fine aggregate, no stability, will not compact well especially dry, it needs to have moisture, and many different sieve size aggregates, like a good run of bank bony gravel, or screened gravel, or crusher run stone with the dust in it. You can build up your subgrade with this material, compacting with a vibratory roller in 1'-0" lifts until you get to subgrade.

Best to avoid cold weather pours, below freezing and you don't want to pour on top of frost, frozen ground. Cold weather pours are done all the time, just a preference I have to avoid it, Remember, concrete takes 28 days to reach full compressive strength, so waterproofing the exterior side and backfilling is usually contingent on that.

If it were me, I would spend a little more and put in a full basement, as you are already putting in the footers, floor and half the walls, this would give you a place for the furnace, water heater, storage, and room to spare. I'm not sure I would go with the monolithic approach, I would go with footers then walls, backfill and compact then pour the floor. Just my thoughts- Rick
