If I were your hubby....I believe I would love to have a 14 in. delta in the garage. Pricy, though. 'bout $500.00 Sorta like a status symbol. Lowes and Home Depot will let him use if for 30 days and return it if not completely satisfied. Always pretty high re-sale value.
HTH.

You"ll also find a lot of those Deltas (formerly Rockwells) in small cabinet shops. They work well. I just arranged for an acquaintance to buy one from a guy trading up in his shop. It was a great buy.

I'd second John's suggestion that you look for a used 14" Delta/Rockwell. They are strong, simple saws with sensible adjustment methods.

I bought a used King 14" recently and discovered it's unusable because there are machine screws where there should be thumb screws and vice versa. In attempting to adjust the blade I ended up shattering a cast metal part which can't be replaced. So it's junk, sitting in my garage.

A few years ago I lent my 14" Delta to a guy doing heavy timbers for a boat. When I eventually got it back he bought a Craftex 14" to continue the job, only to find that the casting which holds the two wheels apart (the yoke?)on the new saw was too flexible to maintain the tension on the band he had become accustomed to with the Delta. He had to reinforce the yoke with with a large piece of 1/4" plate he cut to fit.

The saws made in the 60's through the 80's will work perfectly well and represent good value.

Once I told my wife that I wanted a hand truck. She got me the appliance moving hand truck which worked out great but tottally not what I wanted originally.I think on these type gifts you need him to give you the manufacturer and model he really wants. He might mean a Milwaukee portaband and gets a horizontal. At least have him tell you vertical or horizontal.

Why don't you just ask him which bandsaw he wants? If I were him, I'd rather get something I wanted which wasn't a surprise than to get something that was a surprise that I really didn't want! Just one man's opinion.

For doing that kind of work, he'll need at least a 12" vertical band saw. These run about $300 new. A 14 inch saw will set you back $500 or more, but will be more versatile. Also, at the high end you will find variable speed saws that can also be used to cut steel and other metals. (A wood-cutting saw can be used on aluminum in a pinch).

You've got some time before Christmas. I suggest you look around for a used 14 inch Jet or Delta saw. I just bought a used 12 inch Sears saw off of ebay for 90 bucks, but I did have to spend another 30 bucks to fix it up.

I would avoid the 12 inch saws. First, they just dont have the reach to do a lot of the stuff you'll be asking it to do. Second, their motors are usually pretty anemic. Third, most have no way to attach riser blocks (useful if you need to get extra height for resawing or trimming lathe blanks)

Short of spending huge amounts of cash on a machine like an Incra, your best bet will be either the Jet, Delta, or possibly Grizzly 14". There are several variations of each (HP of motors, open/closed cabinet, etc) so you can price shop. The best price (other than Grizzly which is sold by a single distributer) will probably be at Amazon.com. Good luck.
