Hydraulic questions

I am trying to build/rebuild a home-built hydraulic drive skid steer buggy. I would like to use a 12 to 18 hp lawn tractor engine. What I need to know is how large of a pump I can run off from say a 12 hp engine. I know this sounds kind of far-fetched, but I want to build this thing just so that I can say "I did it!"

redneck is about right if you are using an electric motor, but with a gas engine you must devide by two which gives you about 9 gpm.

First of all the HP required for a hydraulic pump is as follows. about 1 gpm at 1500 psi takes 1 horsepower. so take 18 HP and divide it out and you get 18GPM at 1500psi. Remember that hydraulic pressure gives you force or torque and GPM gives you speed.

That guideline is likely fine for a hydraulic system, such as a log splitter.

However, with a hydrostatic ground drive, on an 18HP powered machine, the pressures may be a bit higher than 1500, and the flow will be WAY below 18 GPM.

The GPM's give you your ground speed, and the pressures will vary GREATLY depending upon load, from a few hundred PSI at light load to 1500 to 1800 PSI at stall, when the hydro's relief valve pops.

I think a Cub Cadet or Deere garden tractor uses a hydro that puts out about 3 GPM's at full ground speed. A hydro capable of handling 18HP would flow somewhere in the 3-5 to and absolute maximum of 8GPM's.

And, if this will be set up like a conventional skid-steer, there will be TWO pumps and motors. If you size the hydro pumps any bigger than the guidlines above, parasitic losses will be so great, the engine will burn up most of it's HP just running the pumps.
