Hi,

Will anyone who knows for sure please tell me who made Craftsman Saw, Model 917 353770? It is a 3.7ci made around 1979 I think. It is the saw in the discussion about 16 to 1 oil Mix. Many have had good ideas. I was told that Echo made it by the seller and someone else believes Poulan made it. It has the sharpner built in and the oil and gas tank on the front and a decompression button on or near top of hand grip.

Thank You very much,
Jimmie

Can't believe I found this thread while trying to locate a chain for the Craftsman model 917.353770 chain saw. Yes, the mixture is listed as 16 to 1 in the owners manual. My saw still runs great, but I am having a problem finding a replacement chain. Sears parts lists it as unavailable. I still have the owners manual if anyone needs information. Can't remember when I bought it, but it must be at least 30 years ago. It is my understanding that any Sears model beginning with 917 was made by Roper. I also have a 917 weed trimmer and lawn tractor - all still running.

Thanks
Fred

I have one of these saws hanging in the barn. Got it from my grandfathers warehouse when he died in 1983. My dad said it had been there since the mid sixties.

Hi there, I have an auto-sharp red body 12 inch chainsaw
from Sears. The first repair shop I had it
repaired at (last year) thought it was a Poulan,
but this year I had the carb overhauled and the parts were for a Homelite. Maybe Homelite and Poulan had the same carbs. Sears said nobody made parts for it any more because it was over
25 years old. Go figure? Anyhow two trips to the shop in 25 years wasn't too bad! Watch out for bad
gas. the technician says if you don't usit at least monthly, drain the fuel mix and run it dry!

Update on the oil I use its Opti-2 one mix fer all 2 cycle engines 12 oz makes 10 gal. like i have already said I do add a little more fer the saw. 2 cycle engines have come a long way in a short time sum with auto oil injection at times run a 100 to 1 mix may be cuzz we now have better oil. I do not run the 16-1 mix its more like 40-1 in my free craftman saw. It will smoke the world up iffin i ran 16-1. I would run 30-1 and fergit it.

Jimmie,
I have some even worse news for you concerning your saw. It is not an Echo, really do not think it is a Poulan, Unfortuantly it almost looks like an old Remington, if that is truly what it is, you are pretty well out of luck with anything except bars and chains and maybe sprockets for it. There is a guy in Iowa who has some Remington parts, pretty they are pretty scarce to find parts. I hope for your sake I am wrong on this one.

I had one of these saws in the late 1970s if it is the one with the self-sharpening stone inside the clutch housing. I wore it out in 3 to 4 winters. It will work much better if you sharpen the chain by hand, or better yet replace the chain with a conventional one requiring a round file to sharpen. I am not sure but I may still have the old one under years of clutter. Best of luck

Don't know about the Manufacturer that far back, but if you need the parts breakdowns, go to www.sears.com and on the left click "parts" and then enter your model number, 917 353770 in the box for model number and click GO. keep working thru the menus and you will get breakdowns you can view and print.

Hi Charles,

The Saw is new complete with Manual. It has never had oil or gas in it until I put some in it. I checked the sears site and they do not have anything for it anymore. I wish I had known how old it was before I bought it. They said that they had bought it a while back and stupid me didn't ask how far back a while was.

Thanks,
Jimmie

917 for Sears is for AYP or American Yard Products who own the Poulan name now.

never needed parts in reply to Jimmie Robbins, 09-25-2005 20:58:29
Jimmie, I bought my saw while I was building my house and I use every year primarily in fall and winter to clear out pine trees. I have never needed parts other than a few spark plugs and one time the little hose that oils the saw which I got at auto parts store. I have been very careful to use a true 16/1 mix. I buy Havoline 2 cycle oil and pour 8 oz of oil into one full gallon of gas. I do not use the auto sharper but sharpen myself with rat tail file. I have used 2 or 3 chains where I hit a rock or metal in the trees. I have a seperate gas can for my 32/1 Echo saw that I also have. The Echo starts much easier but the Craftsman has more power.

Hi tech4,

What chain have you been using? I have been told that the chain that works with the sharpner is no longer available. I don't plan to use tha sharpner any after this Chain that is on it is no longer any good. The book said that the chains that went with this saw had a new stone packed in with the chain. From what I can tell this saw really cuts. The chips are very large that it spits out. I never saw such big chips. I am sure that a new chain will be different.

Thanks,
Jimmie

Hi Tech4,

Thanks a lot. I was told that Poulan made it by several people. The seller said that Echo made it. I haven't seen the features on a poulan but then I have never had a Poulan made back then. I have a 3750, which was called the Bad Boy when I bought it and it is as powerful as the one I bought. It doesn't have the compression release. I wish it did. I will take the sharpener off of the 917 353770. Can I use parts for a Poulan of that same size from that era? Clutch, bar and so on? It seems to be a good saw. I hope that the new oil mixes will work with it ok.

Thanks,
Jimmie
