Hi: I am looking for a speed test that bypasses my ISP. I used to have one that was direct dial. I believe it was sponsered by one of the Modem mfg. My speed tests via the internet are terrible. 25 30K. I know the ISP is going to say it is my line.. same old bull.. If I can bypass the ISP then I will have something to go on..

Thanks

Carol

US Robotics use to have a 800 number to call for speed check but it is no longer connected. Get a AOL free disk and try their free 3 months or what ever now and see if it is faster. After 3 months if your ISP is better then go back. I know some folks that get the free AOL every 3 months and have never paid anything in several years yet. Netzero and Juno also have some free service (limited) that you could use as a trial.

Be aware - if you load AOL software onto your computer, you will never get rid of their proprietary info in your Windows registry unless your F-disk and re-format!! It can cause you problems when you try another ISP. There's a reason for that!

If you are running Windows or UNIX, your PC comes with a built-in ISP lie detector. It's called the traceroute command (tracert on Windows). Just open a DOS window and type "tracert hostname", where hostname is some web site or other machine. You'll see something like this:

[mark@leghorn ~]$ traceroute www.ytmag.com
traceroute to ytmag.com (64.113.213.241), 30 hops max, 38 byte packets 1 host1.64-31-11.bignet.net (64.31.11.1) 148.028 ms 150.615 ms 144.860 ms 2 pon-core1-ge6-0-1.michtel.com (64.79.69.1) 143.841 ms 149.753 ms 139.853ms 3 t3-1-0-0.ar2.cle1.gblx.net (64.208.7.205) 142.893 ms 135.749 ms 144.868 ms 4 so0-0-0-2488M.ar1.CHI2.gblx.net (67.17.67.126) 160.854 ms 153.743 ms 145.837 ms 5 208.50.13.114 (208.50.13.114) 141.894 ms 152.767 ms 154.839 ms 6 so-2-1-0.bbr1.Chicago1.Level3.net (209.244.8.9) 148.850 ms 142.754 ms 161.887 ms 7 ae-0-0.bbr1.Denver1.Level3.net (64.159.1.113) 175.060 ms as-0-0.bbr2.Denver1.Level3.net (64.159.4.226) 179.111 ms ae-0-0.bbr1.Denver1.Level3.net (64.159.1.113) 174.743 ms 8 4.68.113.54 (4.68.113.54) 179.755 ms so-6-0.hsa1.Denver1.Level3.net (4.68.112.154) 172.788 ms 4.68.113.54 (4.68.113.54) 158.752 ms 9 unknown.Level3.net (63.211.236.146) 171.765 ms 170.766 ms 177.678 ms

< more lines like this; ytmag doesn't return traceroute information>

Look at the numbers: A bottleneck will show up a big difference in the time from one hop to the next. You can see from my traceroute returns that the only bottle neck is in the line between me and my ISP, about 150 ms. Look for big descrepancies between hops other than your connection (the first line). These indicate problems that the ISP should look into

Has been a couple of years, but remember was a "speedometer something or other . com", but couldn't remember what it was. So just went to Google and did a search for "modem speedometer", and first hit back was McAfee's speedometer for modem testing.

Used to use it for testing T1's and DSL lines for data transmission. Here's where you may have a problem though - if you have a probelem with either the modem or the line, you won't know which it is. However, if you try through another ISP, say Yahoo or MSN, and the problem goes away, then I'd say is your current ISP. Give it a shot. I never tried it on a dialup, only high speed, but then again, has been a couple of years. Good luck.

Mark

when i had AOL, connection rate was 48,000. Switched to outdrs.net & rate is now 24,000 except when static from Verizons lined drops it to 7000!

You could try another ISP and see what your connect speed reads. Also, make sure you have the latest drivers for your modem.

Hate to tell you this, but it is probably your line, and the first switches it connects to. Have a friend that has been at about 28 for years. Then this month they re-did the neibourhood stuff and he is at 48k or 50plus. Have another friend that lives at 32k. When he picked an ISP, I used a dialer and called maybe 10 diferent ones (diferent numbers) and checked speed on each. All were equaly bad. Check to see if you have a wireless high speed available. Cost here is 50 bucks and available where ever you can see their antenna. The week the wireless (whatwire.com) came to towm, Qwest gave me DSL.

DSL is only direct until it hits the phone exchange - then you "share" connection and speed with everyone else. It's deceptive advertising and you can only have a DSL connection if your live withing a certain distance of your phone provider's exchange. Wireless is a different story and is more available. By far, the best service will come from cable broadband modems. Don't know about Direct TV "D-WaY" as I've never been able to try that. I know several people with cable modems and it is just awesome!!
There's a lot more to modem speed than just the ISP or the modem. Broadband (cable) modems, in general can handle 10Meg downstream and upstream. Bandwidth limits are in place to provide a reasonable amount of speed to every subscriber. Most ISP swill divide their users into two groups - home and business. If someone in your node (area) is operating a server, they can kill your speed, especially a game or porn server. Some ISPs won't allow business servers on the home side of their networks, some don't care.
Your computer can also be the culprit. The Windows stack is limited to how much info it can deal with at one time. Dial up should not be a factor with the stack where cable modems will be. If you do the trace route command from DOS, remember that some sites receive considerable more traffic that others (i.e. ebay!!) so naturally speeds will be slower than others sites. Time of day is a factor, especially with gamers, etc. Plus, there are about 1,000 computers added to the net everyday! There are just a lot of variables that your ISP cannot control.
If you're using dial-up, like me, (56k modem) I'm dancing in the road if I can connect at 28k!!

I'm using Yahoo dialup. My daughter lives about 6 miles away and has SBC DSL. It includes several dialup accounts without charge. I guess SBC thinks there's another phone line and computer in the next room, so I get to use the dialup here. When SBC offered DSL for $14.99/month for 1 year signup, I applied, but they said I'm too far away from the office. Using Windows XP, when I place the cursor on the icon for the connected dialup, the speed shows as kb/sec. The last few weeks it been 44-45kb. Occasionaly it gets as low as 28kb.
