We just put in a concrete floor for the garage, and am wanting to paint it in a black and white checkerboard pattern. How long should I let the concrete cure before sealing it with paint? Thanx.

I did this over Christmas a year ago. You can see a picture at mikelemons.com (scroll down past the Christmas Cards) In my case I let it sit for almost a year but that was only because I couldn't get to it sooner. I used paint from Link It was a lot of work and took about 10 days from start to finish. You only have a max of 72 hours between coats so you need to be able to have quite a bit of time to work on it. I put on one primer coat, two coats of white, one coat on the black squares and then a clear coat. Unfortunately, the top clearcoat took almost 30 days to dry for some reason as yet undetermined. After it finally dried I put one more coat of clear on top which dried like it was supposed to. My garage is roughly 28 by 30 and it took about two gallons per coat. It scratches a little easier than I thought it would, but that may be because the first top coat never got realy hard. It also is a dust magnet and the only way to get it to clean up real well is to use water and a squeegee. But it sure looks super when you're finished.

Worked in the coating business a long time. Takes 28 days for concrete to fully hydrate. a good test ( accepted by the coatings industry) is to take a piece of platic and tape it around the edges to the floor. Leave it overnight, it you see condesate under the plastic water is still coming out and you should wait.

The couple of experiences I've had with having a floor painted by a contractor (Toole Floor Coatings, Albany, GA was one, excellent folks) is that concrete takes a long time to dry. A neighbor of mine had a large slab, about 80x90 in a metal building that took almost a year to dry out enough to paint. They make special equipment to test the cement for moisture content.

If you paint it before it is dry enough, or use the wrong paint, it will not adhere for the long run.

By the way, the "grit" used on floors is NOT SAND but rather it is ALUMINIM OXIDE. Just though I'd mention it in case anyone was thinking about it.

I was just getting ready to paint my concrete garage floor with a Duron(tm) epoxy product. Last week I learned that Duron sold out to SherwinWilliams(tm), and, most of the Duron products will be discontinued as most of their "dealer" store programs.
If you go www.sherwin-williams.com you can find out what they recommend for waiting time. Probably 90 days.

Check the label on the concrete floor paint can. It will tell you how long to wait. Personally, I would buy some commercial tile in black and white and use it on the floor. It will look better than paint. Like the old time showroom look.

When I worked for Dana yet one of the guys put some special epoxy paint down and it had the look of an old time showroom. Of course he also had a collector car he could park in it too, expensive but very durable.
