My Model 612A-PE has died since the last time I used it. Voltage at the clamps on 12V/10 amps automatic is less than 3 millivolts; on 6V/10 amps automatic it's less than 1 volt. On manual 12V/2 amps, it's 10.3 volts. The manual/auto switch tests good. Any ideas? Where can I get a schematic? The factory site has nothing on trouble shooting.

Hi SlowPoke,

The last 10/2 that I did, I just took the regulator board out and ran it wide open. That works as long as you don't forget too switch it too 2amp after a few hours then unplug it before boiling the battery, about 10hrs max or a 115v line voltage timer.

Even while on the 10amp mode, the battery resistance keeps the charging to about 3amps after the starting charge has set into the battery plates.

The auto sense circuit was also on the regulator board.

I'd like to get a schematic so I can better know what I'm doing. There's 7 diodes and about 10 tiny resistors on a 1x2" board and it's riveted to the cooling plate. I'm going to call the factory tomorrow and see what help they will offer...maybe a new board...no-charge, I hope.

I used to pack those things in boxes at the Rensselaer, Ind. Schumacher Plant. (Which has been closed/ sitting empty for several years.)

Look at page three, right hand column of the manual in the MANUAL VS. AUTOMATIC CHARGING SECTION. The charger must be connected to a battery that needs charging. If the battery is so depleted of charge then the charger must be started in the 2 amp mode and then after a few seconds switched to the 10 amp mode.

I left it on 2 amp charge for several hours on a low battery without anything happening. I put it on a charged car battery and it did not light the green "charged" light. A headlamp will light on the manual 2 amp and 50 amp start, but not on automatic. Next stop is a call to the company.

The circuit breaker is auto reset type. If battery is near fully charged the charger will not put out very much amperage.

yes, measuring the unfiltered DC voltge will be decieving. Put on manual and see if it will charge a battery or connect to a 12 volt bright moderen headlight and check for good brightness. if it works ok on manual but not on automatic, then the circuit board is bad. If nothing works then check the AC voltage right at the transformer output.
On the charger I worked on, the SCR(marked 2N6400) on the circuit board was bad.

The newer battery chargers have electronic circuitry that does not put power to the clamps unless they are properly connected to a battery with at least some charge.

If tested open-circuit, or connected to an absolutely dead battery, they will not attempt to charge.

Have you tried charging a known-good battery that is discharged a little?

Measuring this with the meter could by decieving maybe.Since amps are a draw of current by a load and there is no dead battery load on the charger circuit the readings may be meaningless.What does it do when hooked up to a battery with a discharge?Or just see if it improves a battery thats half dead.Not sure if I even know what Im talking about but it may need the load of a battery in the circuit for valid tester readings.

I could be wrong, been a long time since I messed with anything like that. But seems they have a bridge rectifier, it may gone bad.

Like all the junk you by today ya ain't suppose to fix it heck ya can't even get SUN test equipment fixed since Snap On bought them out .
