Lumber prices...

Speculators ran up the price of lumber so high today that they suspended trading. Three weeks ago industry sales people said lumber prices would drop because of the glut of lumber in inventory.

Bought oak this morning at same old price from one supplier (in AZ). Other supplier had raised price of 5 X 5 sheet of Baltic Birch plywood (from Russia) by $4.50 a sheet.

I know what You mean! I work at a lumber supply place and saw it happen! I think they have the same mentality as the oil companies! Two days after Katrina it went beserk! 'Course they blame the storm, You know, shut down mills, shortage of logs, no way to get product from the forests...etc, etc. Plus say demand for rebuilding even thou you and me know there is no way they are gonna start rebuiling much of anything down there for a few months! Belive me, these clowns are sittin' on enough product! Just want to see how much they can get for it! I know for a fact 'cause at our State port they have warehouses full of imported plywood that has been there for months before storm. We go and pick it up and I've seen it, sold plenty to us before storm and beggin' to sell more! Then after storm, they wouldn't even talk about any offers! Market was basically closed everywhere except secondaries and they were higher than heck! Tell Me these clowns aren't in cahoots together! Try to explain that to Your customer! Oh well, guess I'm done with My rant! Scott
