I removed the hydraulic manifold off my tractor and the gasket on the end connected to the touch control unit is made of something that looks like fiberglass or maybe old felt. Anyway it stuck to both the manifold and touch control unit during removal and is not easily scraped off of either. I bought a new gasket (paper type) and I'm wondering if I need to remove the old gasket or will it leak if I dont?

Jeff: Yes, you definitely need to remove the old gasket. One other note--if this is an older tractor (70"s or before, roughly) it"s a better than average possibility that the gasket contained asbestos. It"s nothing to go overboard worrying about, but pick a removal method that doesn"t generate a lot of dust.

Yes, you need to remove the old gasket, COMPLETELY.

A gasket scraper, some scotchbrite, and maybe some gasket solvent will do it. Take the time to do it right now, or you'll have to take the time to do it over later.

If you look at the active ingredient in most pre-packaged containers of gasket solvent, you will see that it is methylene chloride. This is the same stuff that is used in "Zip Strip" paint remover.

You can buy the can of Zip Strip at Home Depot for considerably less than gasket solvent at the auto parts store. Wear gloves, and figure out how you are going to keep the solvent and bits of gasket from getting into the innards of your tractor.
