What is the difference beside a few visible changes on the little workhorse. What does vortec represent.Hope this is not too dumb a question. Thanks, the uninformed Dan

I'm not an expert on the subject - but I know a little about it. I've got a 1994 Astrovan with the 4.3 Vortec. That yeat the 4.3 was available either way. The non-Vortec engine had throttle-body fuel injection and a one-piece intake manifold, whereas the Vortec 4.3 used CPI (central port injection) along with a slightly different intake manifold that could switch planes from 180 to 360 degrees. It increased the torque a small amount. Now, getting away from the published specs., I've had both and for most purposes, see no difference in power or fuel mileage. The older throttle body, however, is more reliable, easier, and cheaper to work on. The troublesome CPI unit was changed to the CSFI (central sequential fuel injection) , which is more servicible than CPI, but other than that - no big gain. I've had 4.3s back to the 80s along with a few 2.8s. If anything, the fuel-mileage has dropped a bit with the newer vehicles. For example, the EPA rated the passenger AWD Astrovan with the 4.3 as such: 1990 (non-Vortec) 16 city and 20 highway, 1996 (Vortec) 15 city and 19 highway, 2002 15 city and 18 highway, and 2003 14 city and 17 highway.

I had a running battle with a couple tanks of crap fuel in a 95 Snoretec equiped with the CPI injection system. Wish we had one with the CSFI injection. The Vortec was a step towards the improved ports and combustion chamber designs used in the LT98/LT1/LT4 until 1996. Then the S1, LS2, LS6 and even the run of the mill pickup truck engines used since the late 1990's. GM could have studied the heads on a 620 two cylinder years ago and accomplished the same thing.

Howdy Glen I have a mechanic friend that is a real believer in the 4.3 and I have one in a 97 Astro, lots of k's on it but still runs nice and quiet(so far), I understand its important to update the fuel filter regularly. Dan in AB

I hear you J, had a '93 non-vortec and now have a 2wd '97 vortec for our work, mileage on the hwy seems very good for the '97 and I also understand that they can be more expensive to work on as you say, thanks Dan.

The vortec motor designation is for the vortec cylinder head with a unique intake port design which maintains high flow with high velocity...

when looking at the 4.3's there are 2 distinct variations.. ones with and ones without, balance shafts. originally the motor did not come with a balance shaft and the little 6 popper would tend to break the crankshaft due to some of the harmonics created by the balancing etc... GM added the balance shaft to correct this problem.
