I would like to power this modem with batteries, requires 12VDC 700mA anyone know how many batteries I would need and what kind.

well its a DSL modem I want to use in the Field, I work for the telco company and the meter they gave only takes a snapshot of a dsl line, I want to have a portable modem so I can view the sync when its connected... I fugured out how to do it already took 2 9 volt batteries put them in series, and it powers it.

Well what ever works - works but two 9v batteries in series would be 18 volts but with a 700ma or 500ma load work fast because those little 9volt batteries are made for normal loads in the 10-15ma load or less. For longer life I would use two 6 volt lantern batteries in series for 12 volts but then again you may be trying to check lines in places that the batteries would be too big for practical use like on top of a pole.

Depends on how long you want to run it! 12v is of course 12v, so you need a 12v battery, or 8 drycells at 1 1/2volts each. 700ma is about 3/4 of an amp - you probably should have something the size of a motorcycle or garden tractor if'n you're going to run it for very long between charges. Many will have an amp-hour rating, just divide that by .7 to find out how long it should last, realizing the voltage may sag toward the end.
