I asked in a welding forum but got only 1 response.
when you push the trigger on your mig gun does it automaticly open the solenoid for the gas and feed the wire at the same time, or, does it open the solenoid have a slight delay then feed the wire?
Jay

All the ones I've used start the wire at the same time as the trigger, but, when you release the trigger the momentum of the motor feeds just a bit, creating a slight slack, and the windup on the motor when you trigger again creates a slight delay in the wire delivery.

My Lincoln SP-170T starts feeding wire as soon as you hit the trigger. Seems to me that a slight delay would be a good thing.

When you get into the high price models you have options to set timing.

I'll add this- I used to work in a factory that ran welders that were operating automatically on robots. They bought wire in drums, 4 drums on a pallet that fed the welders. A Lincoln factory man came and gave us lessons on the welders (that's been 10 years ago and I can't tell you the model number) These had all kinds of settings including the delay you mentioned. I asked the Lincoln rep. what one of those welders cost, it was around $8,000 back then.

Our older welder(air products?) did 'em both at the same time, but on our new Miller it seems there's a slight delay from when you pull the trigger to when the wire starts feeding. Don't know if the gas is on instantly or if there's a delay there too, haven't used it much yet.

Hi, Jay

No delay with the machines I use, either, but I think the gas stays on a moment after you let go of the trigger.

All the best, Stan

The delay is so the gas can flood the welding point with shield gas before the arc strikes.
