I'm a bit ticked off after purchasing a regular generator. I didn't know the welder/generators were so reasonable in price.

I had this same discussion with "Dan", who owns a welder/generator/plasma cutter repair operation, and does all repairs on my equipment. He stated that engine drives particularly older ones that have been taken decent care of, are a good investment. Most commercial operators are rotating these units out of their stable in favor of the newer quieter and lighter Miller Bobcats and Lincolns. Thus the older ones can be had at a reasonable price even if they need some "freshening up". I was advised to stay away from the Lincolns produced in the past few years as there were several problems with dynamic balance of the rotor in the main generator, This would literally tear the generator apart internally before the operator realized anything was going wrong. Repair costs on these were often more than replacing them with a comparable Miller.
Dan is not a welder salesman, but sells used units he buys that come in as trades and off lease/rentals. He had a Lincoln ZR-7 available in my price range, but told me to wait and he would try to find me a good Miller Bobcat.
So I'm going to wait.

thanks for the replies, i'm already seeing some for sale ads for generators etc. in the local paper. somew people will do good if FEMA pays them for the generator and then they turn around and sell it. i'll be checking some of them out. thanks again for the advice.

You can get a Miller Trailblazer that's a few years old for a fair price. I've seen them go used from $1000 to $2500 +/- depending on how old they are and how many hours they have on them. I don't know when Miller made the change but the older ones had a a 8000 watt generator while the newer ones (at least since 2002 that I know of) have 10,000 watt generator. Both also have, I believe it is, a 250 Amp high end on the welding side. The older ones have a fairely small tank and will usually run under a load for at least 4-5 hours before refilling while the newer ones have a larger tank and are supposed to run for 8 hours before they need to be refilled. Hope this helps.

You are correct about the generator power (8000 and 10,000 watts). The older TBs have 10 gallon tank and the newer ones have 12 gallon. I think the 10 gallon TBs would run over 8 hrs at 100% duty cycle, as that is what they are rated for. BobG in VA who has a '99 TB with only 25 hrs on it.

Ive seen on ebay some good welder/generator combos, but then again where I live power outages are rare, but the newer miller ones are pretty good.

The Northern Tool catalouge has some good rigs in it
