One of our pickups is a 76 chevy 1/2 ton c-10 with the stock 350 in it. Right now it is getting about 8 mpg which is pretty crappy these days. Im wondering if there is a company that sells after-market carbs for these engines that can increase their gas mileage, or if there is any other simple upgrade to do to the engine to make it do better?

If you want to convert it to EFI, I have got a used Holley projection Kit for a 350 in a box that is complete. I took it off a 84 pick up I sold several years ago. It needs a throttle position sensor to be run again. If Interested email me at [email protected] and leave off the xyz.

The best Carb is the Quadrjet for mileage and performance. Check out Summit Racing and get the Jet Q Jet for about $ 300.00. All of the articles I have read, Chevy High Performance, Four Wheel and Off Road, Hot rod, etc. find that the Q Jet is a great Carb.

You might just need to rebuild what you have. Those foam floats get heavy with age and it may be overflowing.

As a semi professional engine builder, I strongly reccomend an edelbrock carb, a 1406 or 1407 in particular....

Edelbrock carbs hold a tune better than any other aftermarket carb and get excellent fuel economy and good startups...

Go to a junkyard and find yourself a good performance 4bbl intake from an old chevelle or something and you'll pick up fuel economy and power --- a win win situation!

The 4 bbl. will improve mileage because the primarys are smaller than the 2 bbl..... . assuming you stay off the loud pedal.

Biggest reason for better gas mileage isn't because of the size of the flaps in the carb but because a 4 barrel gives better air/gas flow. The engine just plan works better and that is what help MPH

Try wiring or zip tying the secondaries shut - helps in the keeping the foot out thing.

Good luck,

Bill

Bet you have a 2 barrel carb right?? Believe it or not a 4 barrel gets better mileage as long as you keep your foot out of it. My 1980 chev heavy half with 350 4 barrel gets 15 plus depending on what I'm doing with it.

I agree with old. I changed a 350 from a 2 bbl to a factory 4 bbl and my mileage went up. I got over 15 mpg. I had a Dodge that did the same thing when I changed it.

Thanks for the info. This pickup is more of actually my dads but I use it on the occassion when I need it, but with gas prices these days its pretty rare. I personally dont really know much about engines, but im just seeing some research so I can show my dad this, because we both enjoy driving the pickup. But Ill tell him about this, and thanks alot
