I have a Edge EZ chip in my 99 Dodge Cummins. I noticed at road speed the temp goes up to 190, then at idle it goes back to 150 or so. Am I gonna burn my pistons up with this chip? Should I take i out?

I drive a straight truck, with a Cat in it the fan kicks on at 200 and off at 180.

Hi Buzzsaw,

All diesels have to be operated at greater than 180f to be efficent. I've noticed that with most of the newer diesels they run about 190f.

The guys over on the thedieselstop.com have been testing 203f t-stat's on PSD's and there seeing a slight increase in fuel mileage. The guy that came up with this idea ran his PSD without a fan attached for 2wks while driving around Florida cities during the summer time (empty truck) and never over heated.

I'm not sure with the Cummins but the PSD has a limp mode if the engine gets too hot, controlled by the puter. From what I understand you can travel about 50miles in limp mode at full GCWR before the puter shuts the engine off.

can you change the setting on your chip? i can add 30 , 60 , or 100 hp. to mine. put it on 100 and its gonna get warmer just cause it has too much fuel going into it. BUT it sure do run fast. HE, HE, HE. also like someone else said , you need a pyrometer. got mine at gofast engineering , they have a web site.

first off i have found dash temp gauges to be off by as much as 20 degrees. i love infared thermometers can tell exhaust temps engine temps, cylinder misses (by high or low reading). remember 1/3 of your heat is used, 1/3 is out the coolant and 1/3 out hte exhaust. 190 is nothing to worry about but if your raising coolant 40 degrees imagine what the temperature inside the cylidner is????? ????? ????? ????? ????? ???? if your playing around with chips etc w/o a pyrometer your playing russian roulette. if your under a hard pull going up a mountaina nd she blows when your passing imagine the cost of that compared to a 200 dollar guage.

I agree, you need a more free flowing exhaust and a pyrometer if you've chipped the engine. Doesn't do much good to add the horsepower if using it cracks your head or burns your valves.

190 is not high. The temp goes up because the exhaust temp is higher. A better exhaust system would help.

Buzz..... ...NAW, yer being the "victim" of an over-active Cummins thermostat and yer "I just did sumptin" nerves. Its a known "issue" with Cummins thermostat. My un-modified 160hp 1995 Dodge Cummins Diesel does it. Usually only noticable on LONG TRIPS 'cuz yer scanning the gauges lookin' fer sumptin to go wrong.

BUT ennybody that goes about puttin' chips in without a turbo exhaust temperature probe and meter is asking for trouble..... ....respectfully, Dell, TDR member

I run a few Cummins pickups and am a loyal TDR member.

Your EZ box is a fairly conservative unit. You will likely be fine as long as you treat the truck with respect when working it hard. Make sure you installed a boost fooler to up the boost. It should have come with the EZ box when you bought it. The extra fuel from the box will demand more air through the engine to keep the temps down. Stock boost level is 20 psi, an EZ box will usually support 30-32 psi.

Get guages though. The lift pump on these trucks (98-2002 24 valve engines) is junk. When they fail, and it will fail, you will damage the injector pump due to insufficient fuel pressure. Often, there are no symptoms of a failed lift pump, till the truck quits due to burned up injection pump. Then, you need a 140 dollar lift pump and a 1200 dollar injection pump. A fuel pressure guage will avoid all that. My 2002 truck got two lift pumps before the 100k mile warranty was up. The pumps are that bad.

I run fuel pressure, EGT (turbo temp), and Boost pressure guages on my trucks for these reasons.
