Hello
Can any one tell me what type of plug a 1945 model ZZ engine takes. The reason I ask is because of a hole that leads from the plug to the combustion chamber. It's one quarter of an inch. Was there a plug made to reach in through this hole. The plugs I'm using are NGK A-6. They just fire in a small chamber and ignition has to pass through this small hole into combustion chamber to complete. Engine seems to run rich and most times the plug fouls before it even starts, with choke on and then released. I've rebuilt the carb and when I had it running adjusted it to where it seems to run good. Spark seems good when I view it. But 2 out of 3 times it will not start. fuel running out of carb with plug dry but black.

Pete

Peter: No "special" sparkplugs are used on your model ZZ. --- If you have 18mm threads, use Champion D-16, D-16J, or equivalent. --- If you have 14mm threads use Champion J-8 or equivalent. ----- -- These are standard-style plugs, and fire in the "pre-chamber" of the cylinder head. --- It's been many years since B&S used this style head, and I can't recall (CRS) the theory behind it, but it was intended to utilize a standard sparkplug. ----- Your problem sounds to be carb flooding, as already suggested.

Hi Pete, You getting to much fuel thru the idle jet or main jet or your float level is to high and the engine is flooding.

Close down the idle jet passage and see what happens. Reset the float (if you have one) to a much smaller setting. Adjust the main jet needle (if you have one) to a closed setting.

If the engine runs with the idle jet needle closed then the idle circuit carb ports are plugged.

If the engine idles then dies when the throttle is opened then the main jet ports are plugged or the float setting is too small.

Granted I've never worked on a ZZ engine but combustion engine therory is the same.
