Im in the workes of makin a thumb for my backhoe. I want to make a "mechanical" one. that is one that isnt in a fixed position, but doesnt need additional hydraulics. Yeasterday I fashioned one up outa plywood. Made my thumb, the simple part. Then some linkage to work from the linkage of the bucket. Things move, and i like how its workin. The problem is im not convinted that my distances and leverage points are correct. There is quite a difference from just havin a piece of wood movin back and forth, than a hunk of steel with a large rock or log clamped in there. Has any one got any advice on the pivot points, distances, and leverage? thanks for any help

Hey Cheif -
I would like to see some of you photos also. I have a MF 50c TLB that could use a thumb.

I been looking at this site to get some ideas. Maybe give others some other project ideas.
Thanks, Shep

Thumbs can be made adjustable by making the brace from the stinget to the thumb with 2 pieces of telescoping pipe so you can pin it in different pisitions for different applications. You can gain a lot of adjustment by drilling pin holes 90 degrees apart on the pipes without loosing much strength. We set one up that way on an IH backhoe, and have never regretted the adjustment ability.

i got this one set up so it opens and closes with the bucket, if it fails i will go with the stiff arm set up, as that was my first intention

Chief, I don't have an answer to your question, but I would like to see some pictures of your setup if that is possible. I've been wanting to add a thumb to my old 4500. I was trying to figure the strongest design but not too heavy. If you have any pix, just email 'em to me.

Thanks, Nathan

I made one for my 3550 Ford hoe, great for clearing things like small trees and placing rip rap. I can pluck a small 1/2 inch sapling or 5 inc diameter tree with little ground disturbance, it can pick up larger objects but I limit what i pull from the ground. I made mine in a day i thought obout it for a few yeeks at first and measures the things id think of picking up. 20 bucks in material. I used 4 teeth to mesh between the 5 on the bucket to pick up small things and the cross member in the bottom meets the bucket lip. great for loading logs and scrap iron to. I have pics no idea how to post them. its got an ad justable stiff leg. i use half inch bolts as a my pins for a shear protecton to break the pin rather than the tractor. Email me for pics Best reguards Taylor

Hi chief, There's a book for hydraulic engineering called "Design Engineers Handbook" by Parker Hydraulics #0224-B1 about $20, that would contain the info your wanting. This book would the best as it has more mechanical leverage examples and engineering formulas than any other book in my library for your type of problem.

Try WW Graingers, stock #5H655 for the book.
