Garnet is the best general purpose media you can use in a cabinet blaster, it lasts 10 -15 times longer than sand or glass, and only costs about 25 cents per lb.

I don't understand what you mean about making the cabinet "messy". Any media you use is gonna be dusty, that's the nature of the beast so to speak. No matter what media you use it cleans by being forcably thrown against the object your blastring. When it hits the surface it breaks up, removing the paint, rust, etc, and at the same time creating dust. The "mess" left in the cabinet usually comes more from the material being removed than the media. As for a good media to use, it depends on what your wanting, fast removal or a smoother finish. If you want fast removal then Black Beauty, or ground cullet ( coarse irregular beads of glass)is the way to go. For a medium smooth finish try a meduim grade of ground glass or something like a BX 12 blasting sand. If your wanting a piece with a smoother finish then go to a finer grade of glass beads, or something like a BX30 blasting sand. We've tried all of these in out cabinet over the years to achieve a desired result with different parts. Not to say that there aren't other materials out there, because there are, everything from plastic beads to walnut shells, but these are the most usual ones for a home blast cabinet. Beyond that, I don't know what else to tell you. Blasting with any type media is an inherently messy job but it beats the heck out of plain old sanding. If you have any other questions check out the site for Blast-it-all and give them a call. Blast cabinets and stuff like that are all they do and they really good at it. Their the ones we get all of our media from and they know their stuff.
