Any thoughts as to why at least once in the spring and once in the fall I need to change out a thermocouple on the nat. gas furnace. Is there more to the problem here? Wondering. Dan in AB

Hi Dan,

My post is going to sound sharp, as it's ment to be that way for your own family's safety.

You have been installing the thermocouple wrong and NOT preforming a safety turn down test.

A thermocouple turn down test assures that raw gas is NOT dumped into the combustion chamber when the pilot goes out. Dumping raw gas into a combustion chamber will cause a explosion.

A good book on the subject is:
Moderen Refrigeration
Goodheart & Wilcox
ISBN 0-87006-642-0

Gas equipment repair by ineternet will surley get someone killed.

Try to locate a sketch of the furnace in the owner's manual or parts book. There may be a small shield or diverter fin missing from the area. Maybe there is a spacer missing from the mount that increases the distance from the flame to the thermocouple. You could also check that the proper part number is being used for that particular furnace.

Yup, they are right, too much heat will kill them faster than anything, too close to the pilot or the pilot is turned up too high..

I"d say the flame is to high or just to close to the TC bulb. Seems I just replaced the one on mine once in 15 years.

Dan:
Is the thermocouple too close to the flame of the pilot or the burner? This can erode the tip of the thermocouple.
