Im trying to rig up a Solenoid for my cheap Chicago Electric welder. The Transformer for the board is 24 VAC I want to hook up a relay and a Solenoid to open when the trigger is pulled on the welding gun. Question is, I guess I will need to buy a VAC relay and a VAC solenoid right? what would happen if you used VDC Relay? would it fry?

Look around a welding supply place for a kit, might be easier, if you look around you can find cheep relays, you should have no trouble finding a 24 VAC 3 pole relay, if you run a DC relay on AC it wont blow up, but it will chatter, there will be less current flow through the relay coil and may not pull in enough, and they won"t stay closed it will just sit and chatter, I went to a service call last winter and was going through the boiler controls in this big building and found a 24 VDC relay that had 120 Volts AC on it, and it had been there for a year and didn"t burn out, so when we got back to the shop we did a little experament and hooked up another relay like that with a harmonic analizer on it and let it chatter overnight, never burned out but did it ever put out a lot of harmonics on the electrical system..

A DC coil has many turns of fine high resistance wire to limit the current flow yet produce enough ampere turns to get a strong enough magnetic field. An AC coil has fewer turns of heavier wire. The inductive reactance of AC limits current flow. So, a 120V DC coil with 120VAC applied will hum slightly, do little to no work and may get warm due to eddy currents. A 120VAC coil with 120V DC applied will go up in smoke. You can pull the core from an energized DC coil and make little difference to the current. Pull the core from an AC coil and current will increase several times.....smoke.

Right on, hard to explain to people about inductive reactance, get lots of smoke with dc on an ac device, when I had that 24 volt dc coil I never thought that there would be enough inductive reactance on top of the dc resistance to keep it from burning up for a year, got a hell of a chatter to them though.. What do you do, you seam to know a little bit about electrical stuff, you know stuff that most people don't think about, I am an electrician who gets the disaster trouble shooting jobs they can't figure out, been out on jobs where they had a different contractor out there every 3 months for several years and kept going through the phone book when they gave up and tried another contractor, then shook my head when I got there and looked things over, so it makes you think, and started building radio's when I was about 13, and 20 years or so of ham radio has taught me some things as well.

I'm gonna make an assumption that your welder is a MIG machine and your wanting to put in a gas valve. That being the case all you need is a 24V A/C Normally open,single pole, single throw relay and the gas valve also needs to have a 24V A/C coil and should be a normally closed type. They do make low voltage A/C relays, etc so don't try using ones designed for DC unless you want to burn everything up. You should be able to get everything you need from somewhere like McMaster Carr, MSC, or Grainger. Good luck.

Century (now WCTA division of Lincoln Electric)
made a kit p/n 2111 that included all the solenoids, wiring harness, regulator etc to convert their machines to GMAW. Maybe this or parts of this will work for you.
