I'm trying to find the proper fuel mixture for a 25cc homelite trimmer. I'm using 40.1 and it smokes and floods out. I tried to find the info on homelite.com and all I get is Ryobe info. Is homelite out of bissiness?

All of the 50:1 comments have been accurate - for current Homelite models. I had one that recently died (10 yrs old) that called for 30:1. You need to find the model number and year to be really sure. As far as your's not running correctly, the first thing I would check is the exhaust. Those trimmers are known for getting the muffler/spark arrester clogged up. Pull the muffler off and clean the whole thing well. On my old Homelite, I finally had to resort taking a drill and opening up some holes in the guts of the muffler.

Robert have you cleaned the air filter on that trimmer lately? If it is dirty or you are running the mixture too rich it will act that way. I run golden spectro at 40-1 in everything I have from a weedeater, chainsaw to a 250cc motocross bike with excelent results. I have ran different brand oils with good results also.

I do recall something about Homelite being acquired by someone, not sure though.

Best thing you can do is run a synthetic 2 stroke oil. The oil Sthil sells is synthetic and the newer engines are built expecting to use synthetic. I believe that a mineral 2 stroke will not provide a suitable lubricant and you could destroy a Sthil this way.

I use (and sell) Amsoil products and keep a 50:1 mix of Amsoil 2 cycle oil for everything I have, no matter the mfg suggested ratio. Never a problem. Never have a problem with gas going "dead" either. The two stroke oil will last a year or more and still start right up.

I had a coworker who had a old Mercury outboard that was darn difficult to start, especially the first time of the day. I GAVE him a quart of Amsoil synthetic 2 cycle oil, told him if he liked it to pay me for it (kinda pricey, but...) he mixed a fresh tank and flushed all old fuel out, started right up and has ever since. Paid me after the first fishing trip using it, he was so impressed!!!! The stuff sells itself.

That's hard to choke down..just how would any oil mixed in the right proportions aid in the starting of a machine? I use my TCW 111 from my outboards in all my mix tools with no problem.
This idea that Amsoil or any other will make an engine start well needs explaining.

Here is the way I think Homelite history went.. They had Plants in Greer & Columbia, SC & Gastonia,& Charlotte, NC.. Then in the early 90's Deere bought them & phased the manufacturing to Mexico... Quality suffered (Gee, what a surprise!!! )& production ended... Then a few years ago, Ryobi started building products under the Homelite name in Pickens, SC.. This is the way I remember things happening, so don't quote me on this, LOL. It was quite a blow to our area when production went to Mexico, lots of good folks were unemployed....

I'm originally from Pickens and go up there to the old family farm as often as possible. Ryobi does indeed make homelite saws and such at the plant as well as John Deere saws. They are, however, moving much of the production to China in the very near future.

follow the link below for info on the current Homelite trimmers and their owners manuals (which show 50:1 mix, 2.6 oz per gal)

It seems it should run OK on 40:1 ratio. Might try a new plug, & carb adjustment... Is the fuel fresh?? Mixed fuel gets stale quickly...

Don't forget, REAL gallons are measured by the Imperial measure. American gallons are considerably smaller, which might account for the 2.6/3.2 difference.

can't say alot about the homelite but, i do know about the sthil chain saw's i had a good one and ran poulan oil in it and it lasted about 3 day's of heavy hard wood cutting (6 to 10 rick a day 3 TO 5 CORD'S) the fella i bought it from told me when i took it back that stihl makes their on oil for their saw's and do not run anything else in it and alway's use unleaded gasoline for the mixture, the poulan i have i buy just the generic stuff at walmart and it seems to just keep cutting right on along

LDC,

You're man who told you that about Stihl oil is full of foul digested food found at the end of the alimentary canal.

I have owned 3 stihl saws and every one of them have been fed a steady diet of regular 2 cycle outboard oil mixed as per stihls directions (32:1). The oldest saw was bought in december 1982 (028). The next saw was an 056 Magnum...and the last was bought a year ago, it's an 017 I think. Never had an engine failure in 30+ years of running 2 cycle engines on outboard motor oil. I have owned 2 Lawnboy mowers in 25 years.....all fed the same mix, maybe 4 or 5 weedeaters and a circa 1950 5 hp evinrude. The weedeaters would fall apart but the engines ran fine. Cheaper to toss them and buy another for $69 than to fix the throttles, cables and heads. BTW, Stihl does not own an oil refinery, here or abroad. Somebody makes it for them. This BS tossed around about air cooled vs. water cooled engines is just that. If you like the conveinence of the little squeeze bottles, buy it. If you're cheap like me, buy any name brand 2 cycle oil by the quart and be happy.

So are you saying I can use the cheap poulan oil or quicksilver outboard oil in my stihl trimmer just use it at 2.6 ounces per gallon?

I am saying use the 'cheap' Quicksilver or Poulan oil BUT MIX IT ACCORDING TO STIHLS RECOMMENDATIONS. You do have an owners manual don't you? Read it. Contained therein is a mix table. They will tell you if using their high dollar oil in those little ornage bottles to dump a bottle in 2.5 gallons of gas OR to mix other oils at 40:1 or 32:1....read the book, it'll tell you.

I am amazed at the fear folks have at using a brand of oil other than what the manufacturer sells. Do you go down to the dealership where you bought your car/truck and buy Ford-Chevy-Chrysler branded motor oil? Didn't think so.
