Concrete Mixer Speed?

I have a small concrete mixer that spins so fast that the centrifical force throws the material to the outside of the drum and won't allow it to mix. It looks like it's turning slow, but it doesn't take much speed to be too fast. Someone before me has welded a pulley on the secondary shaft, and I suspect this pulley is smaller than it's supposed to be. I have a jack shaft that I plan to use to drop the speed, but I am aware that I can drop it too much and cause it to mix too slow. The old mixer is in good condition except for the speed problem. I think the mixer working volume is about three cubic feet if I remember right. Do any of you guys know about how fast those old mixers turned?

Thanks,
Paul H.

I was all set to rig up a jackshaft on the old mixer this morning when my son showed up with a brand new one, three point hitch with a hydraulic dump. He's laying blocks for a new shop at his place, and we are gonna use it to mix mortar and batch some small pours. Concrete prices are high in Southern Illinois, and short load fees bring the price higher yet. They haven't adjusted for the fuel price spike yet, so I'm sure it will soon be higher again. . . Thanks again Joe and Russel

We had an old 2speed,long gone, but 50rpm(mix)and 25rpm "hold" comes to mind but not positive. It had a small 2spd w/reverse gearbox like an old riding mower on it.Unknown if it was"factory or modified. Check your motor too, might be a newer hi speed(3450?) motor instead of the older 1300s or so.
