Restoring VW bugs I had a large need for a wirewheel station to clean up many parts. Not being able to find a ready made tool that would fit the bill I came up with the idea of a tall mandrell with close pulley and open wirewheels. the model A connecting rod fit the bill for the mandrell height and a 1 1/2inch pulley fit the bill for a small pulley close to the pin end of the connecting rod. The cap bolts fit the bill for mounting directly to counter top. Only thing missing was the mandrell shaft so I had a machinest buddy of mine make me one. Mounted this on the work bench with a 1/3 HP motor under the bench and belt drive up to the mandrell pulley. Used an assortment of brushes and buffer heads on this for the job at hand. Used it daily for about 20 years.

Thanks for the info. Maybe two of the rods 10-12" apart would get the small pulley & belt out of the way. ( A co-worker got her finger caught in a pulley at work.) I'll try to find some newer rods at the junk yard. Thanks again.
