if anyone watches, during their fabrication, they use a cut-off grinder. its electric, small and they use it to cut curves when building gas tank, fit tubeing, etc. it resembles a air cut off tool. it uses thin flat discs, maybe 3"-4" looks to be around 1/8" thick. the disc are flat, not like the coned shsped mounting surface on the 4 1/2" grinder. its like a super heavy duty dremel. I see the discs lots of places for sale. but can't find the grinder. does anyone know who makes them?

I have a Bluepoint (Snap-On) air powered cutoff tool on my service truck that takes a 4" thin disc. It is purpose built with a wheel guard. There are adapters available for air die grinders that work as well. Only problem is these tools can eat up a disc in about 6" and when caught in a bind they grenade so a full face shield is higly recomended.

The adapter for using thin cut off wheels with an angle grinder having 5/8-11 threads is Dewalt 4706, Makita 193553-7.

Angle grinders and die grinders can be bought at Sears or Home Depot stores nationwide , just to mention a few...

Sounds like a die grinder to me, look in a harbour freight catalog onlie and look at the picture, think it's harbourfreight.com

Why not just E-mail OCC your self and ask them?? I watch them all the time and ask the same qustion, those wheels look to me like they are metal cut off wheels. just my $.02 cents. J.L

Ive been using standard 4 1/2" grinders with the thin cutoff wheels, no problem.

Here is a Makita high speed grinder which could be used with the grinding disc adapter. Otherwise you could use a tool like a Rotozip which is small, electric and has the required speed and a 1/4" collet for the disc adapter.

If you want to use a 1/16 x 4-1/2" cut off wheel in an angle grinder, there is a special adapter washer available. It's about 1/4" thick, 1" wide and has a 5/8 center hole. To use it, remove the 3" backup flange, place the washer on the spindle, center the cut off wheel, and screw on the standard 5/8-11 grinder nut. The washer has a recess so the nut tightens down on the wheel. Using ordinary washers does not center the wheel and causes it to vibrate at high speed. Be very carefull since the wheel can jam and break.

Around here cone shaped cut off wheels are available for the 41/2 grinder.Mandrel size wrong I just center on grinder as good as I can and use large washer--works great!

To answer your question HARBOR FRRIGHT TOOLS is the place to go.....I have several most of them only cost $10 -- $40..... I find my self using the electric ones most, but I have air ones also.....I must have 8 or 10 can't pass up a sale...I like the 4 --41/2" disk @ 1/16 & 1/8' thickness.....Be sure to wear leather gloves & a face chield....some times you can break one....

IHC Red is right, they're called "die grinders". I've had one for years, 1/4 inch collet, can get all kinds of stones and wheels for them. It's one of the primary tools we use to port heads. Basically a heavy-duty, air powered Dremel.

Could not restore a tractor with out a so called die grinder Presently have 4 2 right angle and 2 straight grinders 1 of each has a small wire brush it and the other 2 have a small grind/cutoff wheel I also have 2 4 1/2 inch grinders set up `1 with a cup wheel and the other with a grinding wheel

what they use most of the is that yellow tool. it is a dewalt 4 1/2 inch angle grinder. they are using it free hand with out the gaurd. you use a cut off wheel which is thinner. the washer that holds it on is reversable for the two thick-nesses.

I bought one of those die-grinders, with the safety handle, and the safety guard on the wheel! Oh, my, what a safe tool, with that stuff! Only problem, it was engineered so safe, i couldn't get it close enough to cut anything with it! I had to "squash" the handle down to fit in my hand, And the hood over the disc got the heave-ho right away! (I'm not the kind to sue if i cut myself with it--it won't be the fault of the factory, if i hurt myself with it!) As for the discs, i found some discs made in Italy, which last a long time when cutting steel and aluminum! Can't remember the name of them. I'll look later, and send the name. Rustyj
