Electrolysis Results

I"ve tried electrolysis several times with pretty good results, although it never quite seems to get all of the rust zits completely off. No matter how long I let the process continue, there seem to be a few places, especially if the metal is heavily pitted, where brown rust continues to cling to the metal. After a while, it appears most of the electrical current goes through the clean metal. I run a pretty good current through the item, say about 30-40 amps for something like a 16-inch wheel, and I use about a tablespoon of lye per gallon of water. I"ve let the process run for 4-6 hours. At that point 98 percent of the rust is gone, but the process seems to stall out and the other 2 percent just hangs on. Any recommendations?

I think some of the problem is the conductivity of the debris that collects on the bottom of the container.

I get better and faster cleaning with an initial gunk container and than finish up in a cleaner container.

In the finish container I use a surround of roof flashing for the electrode.

Ribbitt, I agree with Joe"s reply & the only thing I can add is to change some of the water. I also use washing soda. I had one heck of a time getting Electrolysis to work for me. I used air hose to churn up solution, then dipped out 1/3 of total. Someone needs to come up with a test strip to monitor solution.

Remember it works by line of sight, so you may need to move the electrode around once in a while.
Also be sure to keep the electrode clean and it doesn"t hurt to give the part a quick wipe with a scotch-brite pad onnce in a while. Have you tried it with washing soda instead of the lye? I think I got better results using it. You"ve got to admit even getting 98 o/o off with no work is pretty good! I think I might see if I could lower my amps a bit also, unless you"re just in that big of a hurry, I think the slow and low works better. I"ve left stuff cooking on 10-15 amps for a week or more many times.
