jigsaw - top handle or barrel handle

Im shopping for a new jigsaw and see top/D handle conventional models and barrel handle models that the motor is where you grip. Any one got any advice on which style is better or what advantage one has over the other or any experience with using either style?

Thanks for the input. I did some research and seems the top handle is popular in the US and barrel handle is popular in Europe. I've also looked up a lot of reviews and some folks, like DL said, did find the barrel handle to their liking even after years of the top handle. On the other hand, MSB has a point- Its whatever your use to. Now BUCKVA is my kind of guy. Never saw anything wrong with having multiple tools of any kind. Just to be different and to try something new, I think I'll give a barrel handle a try.

Classic case of when you need at least 4 jig saws that have different features. Overall I prefer the top handle with the scrool feature for close and very irregular work. Now for fairly straight and slight curve work I prefer the hold the motor type. Of course you will need one with good action to do the push type blades for say countertop laminant work. Come to think of it you may need 6 as all the newer stuff concentrates on wierd little features lke lights, lasers and quick change this and that while they can't cut very good. You may have to have a few good routers and sawsalls just to get the job done. Happy huntin-never got too many tools and none of what you've got is right for the job you are doin.

My preference is the top handle.I think I get better control of the cut that way.Probably its whatever a guy gets used to,I suppose.

LOL!!! I like the barrel grip for the same reason!!! Actually, by holding the motor, it seems I have a "lower center of gravity" when using the saw... saw seems less inclined to want to tip... easier to keep the base flat on the work. My hands are fairly large also... holding the motor just seems easier to me.
